Air conditioning service

Just been contacted by BMW @ Bristol, to make sure that I'm okay for tomorrows brake fluid change.......was then asked if I wanted my air conditioning serviced at the same time, apparently it's currently at a special price of £129.00. I was also advised that BMW recommend that its carried out every 2 years, however as it is not part of a service item I am not sure of the Warranty implications if it is not done.

Okay, is this reasonable amount to pay? does it need doing every two years, I ask the question because in the past 20 years of owning/using cars with air conditioning, I have never knowingly had it done, though I don't keep cars longer than 3 years anyway

I really don't think air conditioning has to be serviced every 2 years. All BMW I owned never required it, and was still very effective in hot summer.

My local dealer provides:

Air Conditioning Refresh (£49.00) includes: clean and disinfect the evaporator; clean and disinfect entire air duct system; and treat air vents and BMW interior.

Air Conditioning Recharge (£149.00) includes: drain air refrigerant; check system for leaks; recharge refrigerant and lubricant; and check system operating pressures.

Agree, mine is nearly six years old and never been touched....but it probably needs to be done more often (say 3-4 years) if it ISN'T regularly used, mine is only ever off if the top is down.

But most aircon specialists would charge circa £80 for a full recharge so its the usual deal rip-off IMHO.

10 year old X5 when sold with 100k - never serviced
8 year old Z4 never serviced.
Both run perfectly

Nice little earner for garages and imho needs doing only if cooling becomes impaired.

Thanks guys, pretty much sums up my feelings too, just another ploy for them to try and part me from my hard earned cash

They didn't mention this to me when it was in for the 2 years service.
