Air con with the roof down 🤔

The only issue is fuel economy, though you're not using refrigerant per se. I normally set it to manual mode (turn auto off) with the top down and direct the flow onto my feet and body. If you leave it in auto mode, the car will be trying to cool the planet :)

If BMW did not want you to use the a/c with the roof down they would have programmed it out, you actually have to go into the a/c menu to turn it off. The a/c is a 99.99% closed loop system on the refrigerant side as the loop isn't entirely sealed, there is a little leakage through the relief valve (<3x10^-6 mbar.l/sec) and hence they need refilling over time.

Love all the arguments on this thread.

I have always used the heating and cooling in the car with the roof down.

Cold air blowing on you on a hot day is nice!
Warm air on a cooler day is nice!

Enjoy the car how you wish to enjoy it!

I don't put on the AC at home and leave the doors/windows open, so I don't use the car AC with the top down. The AC may cope, but my OCD won't let me do it.
Very hot/humid = roof up and AC on for me.

If I collect all your toys and place them neatly back in your pram will you promise to behave
Nope, I don't do behaving. Spent too many years trying.....failed miserably so gave up. :D

I don't have an obsession with Peter, he just winds me up with his 'I know everything cos I've read all the books and Googled stuff, but have no practical knowledge in anything really'. It's OK, cos he dislikes me more and I'm on his ignore list so it doesn't matter what I say.
Sometimes reading his incessant, thinly veiled, 'I'm so much richer and more intelligent than everyone else' drivel just makes me reply. I don't do it very often anymore TBH.

I have only one obsession....it has four wheels and is in my garage. It's winding me up much more than Peter ever could, believe me. :)
Without doubt Andy your posts entertain me more than any others on the Forum.
By the way how is the jigsaw coming along?

Exactly. Why would you?

That was sort of what I was trying to get at, but apparently my supposed 'obsession' with a certain member (and what a member!) got in the way and I went off piste (again).

That's two of us then Ian (out of the many). I'll take that.

The jigsaw is fighting me every step of the way. I have decided my little Z3 really doesn't want to be something else, so is digging it's heels in. I've tried shouting at it, I've tried a big hammer, I've even tried being nice to it, but it don't want to play nice. :x
