Air bag deactivation

Some advice needed pls.

Have just picked myself up off the floor having received a quote from main dealer to retrofit the passenger air bag deactivation facility, via key in passenger footwell. £700!! This inclues £220 for a replacement centre console which may or may not be needed.

Is there anything I can do to achieve a solution other than through this route?

Is it possible to just deactivate the facility permanently and then reactivate before selling? i.e. removal of the Co2 charge?

Help would be appreciated, there is no way i want to spend such a load of wonga on a facility I will only need once every few month's, to take my son to child-minder. Obv if I don't go for it I can't use the car as-is with him in it & I'll have to use my pushbike when the 'grown-up' car is in use elsewhere.

Cant answer your question, but what about the side airbag?

Isnt that an issue to with kids?

yeah, you're right :? I guess I'd need to remove / disable the sensor that sends the signal to both bags? Anyone any idea where such a beast lies?

The airbag is disabled on my car at the moment after having removed the seats...

There is a large multiplug under each seat which if disconnected, throws up an alarm on the system and temporarily disables the airbags. I suppose you could, if you wanted to, temporarily disconnect this plug. You would lose the heated seats and electric movement (if you have them) as well though.

I thought they all came w/that :? , I keep my passenger a/b deactivated because I never have any passengers, via sticking your ignition key in the passenger side door in the jam and turning. Bummer you can't turn your off

it must only be standard on zeds on your side of the pond fni as ive never seen one in the uk with it as standard,my wife's old fiat punto had the option to turn the air bag off via a key lock on the pasanger side of the dashboard when you opened the door

De-activated air bags is probably an issue in the USA because of ambulance chasing lawyers.

Thanks for help / comments peeps..

Managed to disconnect multi-plug unit under passenger seat (access difficult though due to first aid box which I couldn't find holding screws for :x )and sure enough the air bag + all other electrics associated with the seat were deactivated.

Had a wee think and decided to investigate a little further under the seat; found what I was looking for, a two-pin plug specifically for the air bag system, located beside the seat belt receiver mounting point. Undid this (also much more accessible), made good the multi-plug, and voila - I now have all other electrics back other than the air bags £700 saved; tyres or private plate, tricky :evil:
