Air Bag and Exhaust emmisions light on

Hi, I bought my Z4 4 days ago and today both the Air bag warning light and Exhaust emissions light have popped up, one after the other. The performance of the car does not seem to have been affected at all.

I have searched the topics on here and there is plenty of information about both these faults. It seems like each fault can be caused by a number of conditions and have booked it in to bmw, its due an mot on Friday anyway.

When i bought the car i took out a "Customer protect" gold warranty, which i am told covers sudden stoppage of function of most electrical and mechanical parts, so i am hoping that these faults will be covered. Does anybody any experience of this kind of warranty ?

Need to get myself a good fault code reader I think.

Thanks,

Robert

Apparently the warranty does not cover either the air or air bag system. As for the exhaust emissions light, that is covered, however, the cost of a diagnostic check is 49.99 (Halfords) The cost of diagnosing the fault is not covered. I think i would be best to invest in a code reader and then present it to a garage to be fixed, depending on where the fault lies.

For about £30 you can buy a code reader on EBay.
I bought this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/D900-Any-Car-OBD2-EOBD-CAN-BUS-Fault-Code-Reader-Scanner-diagnostic-scan-tool-UK-/110886460681?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item19d1591d09

and it worked fine for me and others on here with our Z4's though ofc others are available.
It will easily read and cancel the emissions light, but I think the air bag could be more problematic judging by the length of the topic on this forum.
Considering that my local dealer wanted £130 + VAT just to read the code when my emissions light came on, £30 is a good investment.
Be wary of letting garages replace parts 'adhoc' as Andy on here has found out, they seem to want to work their way through the entire car in the hope it cures the fault.

Thanks Guys,

I think I will purchase the D900 code reader from ebay, it seems to be the most popular choice. As you suggest i think the air bag light could pose more of a problem. It might be worth just checking all the connections under the passenger seat. It was fine until my lard ass brother sat in the car :violent1:

Good advice!

My airbag light stayed on for one leg of a short journey the other day, but then when I'd done some shopping and got back in and restarted the car it went out as normal and has been fine ever since. Had me worried there for a minute. I hate "ghost in the machine" type intermittent strangeness. :?

Just got my car back from the mot at BMW, no problems there, however, the dealer stated that the MOT law is set to change this year which means that an air bag warning light will be an MOT failure in future.

At least it gives me a year to figure whats wrong with it.

Also got the D900 code reader from Ebay and cleared the Exhaust emissions light. I know you can reset the airbag light but it doesn't actually show any fault in the DTC menu. Perhaps its not possible to read using the code reader ?
