Ah well! :-(

So whilst I’ve been laid up I’ve been looking at a replacement, I’ve never driven either model so your thoughts would be appreciated. I do around 5k miles a year, use a car daily, outside 24/7. A priority (up there for the first time ) is comfort

1st choice, purely because I’ve always loved them and it’s an itch that’s always been there It’s now or never with this. Back of my mind is saying ITS NOT REALLY A DAILY

Sorry to hear you are laid up, and I hope you make a speedy recovery.

As comfort has become a priority the 850 has to be the better option, and for that sort of mileage wouldn't be ruinous for a daily. Plus it's got a V12. :D

Glad to hear you're recovering well Brian

This isn't to put you off, I still think you should go for one, however for the 850i there are some parts that are no longer available from BMW and they are also hard to find second hand. Driveshafts is one example.

Watch some videos from YouTuber M539 Restorations. He has rebuilt many 850's as he has a passion for them.

Brian, there will always be an E89 out there. I say put that to one side and scratch the itch.

This - and then find someone to install a manual gearbox. Once it finished (and you’ve fixed all of the other problems), I’ll happily take it off your hands so you can get an E89 :D

Can I put a claim in the boot brackets for the wind deflector please. Still trying to avoid paying £20 for a new set

An 850 is a piece of art, without a doubt. Stunning cars.
Agreed. But not as a daily in 2025.
I am sure people have done it, or are still doing it, but only those with very deep pockets and good public transport.

They are a bona-fide classic now (like myself).

BTW I have read that the 840 is a more reliable engine. :?

Maybe, but I just couldn't choose a V8 when there was a V12 option!

It looks like he hit you fairly hard, glad you're both ok. Did that skinny wheel and tyre on the pavement come from his car? No wonder he couldn't stop in time!
Unless the hardtop is specifically listed on the insurance as being fitted to the car, I would suggest that you have legitimate grounds for removing it when you collect your other belongings that you were carrying with you in the car.
Out of interest, where did you get the cill extensions attached to the underside of the aeroskirts?

AGT Styling in Portugal  Look them up on Insta

Mine will be up for sale soon! :)

Thanks. I just had a quick look at their website - they sell cill extensions for the Lotus Exige for significantly less than I paid to import a set from the States. Oh well...
If yours survived in one piece, please let me know how much you want for them

Go get yourself an XJS then Iain. Good luck!

I wouldn't want a V12 that is slower than my straight 6 thanks!

But I have looked at V12 DB9 prices recently.

I’ve been doing that for years…and then looking at the potential maintenance costs.
Also, I always find myself distracted by the beauty of the Vantage and those with a V12 engine are rather more than a DB9!

Yep, me too. There is a reason why older Astons are cheap.
I would love a DB9, but head says NO! :(

Yet the same goes for maintenance costs for older Ferraris (and some), but they seem to hold their values very well. :?

If only there was some way to combine the beautiful aesthetic of an old Ferrari with the mechanical reliability of something like an early 2000s BMW all for the cost of a good DB9 (and blood, sweat, tears, sanity and half a dozen cylinders)... :D

There isn't! Believe me, I've tried.

Fair play to you though as you're still trying!

I love the idea of a manual Ferrari 456 too. Would that be more ruinous than a DB9? :scratchhead:

Apologies to Brian for straying off-topic - I hope he is feeling a bit better.
