My GF's father is disabled, the mother being a full time carer for him so over the last few years I've gained an insight to the benefits system which I previously had no awareness of.

My GF's father was a hard working individual like the rest of us until one day he fell down some stairs and ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. The kind of frightening thing that could happen to anyone, and you can't plan for financially.
The issue with the benefits system is the system itself, not just the well publicised weaknesses and openness to abuse, but the basics of how it all works and operates. Like in a lot of companies (and no doubt other departments in government) there is a lot of money wasted due to poorly structured or poorly administrated systems.

How does living in an area with lower house prices reflect on somebody's financial "acumen"? What you're implying is that living in a cheaper house/ area correlates to having poor financial sense?

I think you've made a sweeping generalisation that Craig would be offended by NDB's comment. Not everybody judges their self-worth on their net worth.
I'm very aware that house prices in my area are lower than prices in London....I wouldn't be offended by a 'Londoner' pointing this out.

What a load of tosh. It's a fact that property prices vary around the country. Why is it offensive to make reference to that. There are advantages and disadvantages to living in any particular area.

Perhaps, with 11 kids she needs something a little larger than the house originally mentioned and, while she's at it, she might like to move to a better area...
This seems to fit the bill nicely... and I'm sure we won't mind stumping up a bit extra so that the kids can go to better schools, mix with nicer people and not grow up to be a feckless gobshite like their mother....
