AG roof proofer-

Hi all,i know about the permeable debate,but if AG beads water surely this is better for the thread on the roof long term?(rather than BMWs version that soaks through)-any thoughts?
 
I guess I trust BMW to know what is best for their hoods rather than AG who sell their product for all types of roof :roll:
 
This 'seal v let water through' argument has been discussed many times.
There are many comments saying you shouldn't "because blah", and many that say it's better to seal "because blah..."
I have seen some posted photo's of 'sealed', and some that haven't.

What I have never seen...... is someone reporting they have actually had a problem caused by sealing, which suggests to me that it isn't actually a problem.
however what I have seen is someone on here who used the BMW treatment only to find green mould growing later on.
 
BMW make cars and Autoglym make car care products. Go with the car care specialist, and like gookah says, no one here's had a problem with it.

I had a muddy paw'ed cat walk over my Autoglym prep'ed hood and a bird sh*t on it too, then it rained :thumbsdown: both washed off with a hose with no sweat. Not sure how well it would have come off if the hood hadn't been sealed.
 
I use the BMW soft top impregnating agent with no problems. Do AG know what type of roof is on the Zed? I dont think so. :poke: :fuelfire:
 
I use AG when i first got my car back in November and still looks great and after the bad winter we had .

I have on my Z3, but I have never needed to use anything on the Z4's so far. The Z3 had no problems whatsoever.
But I will probably use AG if I do need to treat the roof in the future based on what I have read so far which is
BMW problem =1.
AG problem =0.

Like someone said in another post, BMW probably thought most people wouldn't seal their hoods, so designed it to work without requiring a sealant. That doesn't mean sealing the roof is a bad thing to do. I'd rather use the AG kit and keep the water out of the hood completely.
 
As said it dosn't really matter what you do, there dosn't seem to be any products that will damage your roof so use what you think will be best.
 
Well BMW didn't make the hood, Haartz did. What is the only company Haartz endorse? Raggtopp. What is Raggtopp? A proofer that beads water (the cleaner is actually Haartz, not Raggtopp - but apparently they gave it to Raggtopp if they agreed to mass produce and sell the proofer). BMW also sell a proofer that also beads water.

Well I'm convinced :)

Ultimately the Z4 roof is a mohair outer skin, a waterproof skin, and a soundproofed inner skin. No more special than any mohair roof (apart from the extra soundproofing). The MX-5, while not made by Haartz is largely the same and you waterproof that one too despite the waterproof skin being underneath the mohair just like the Z4. Waterproof layers aren't very pretty or strong. Mohair is pretty and strong. Which would you place on the outside?
 
I think the point worth making here is that I for one have never heard of any deterioration issues with the Z4 roof in general - attributable to proofing or not.

In that case, isn't it pretty safe to assume that all the proofers are safe to use? We've all been using various ones for years.

As for AG not knowing which type of roof is fitted to the Z4 ? Come on - it's more than they dare do, to sell a mainstream product that's going to harm the very thing it's meant to protect.

You can bet they've done their homework well enough.

Like I said though - never heard of any issues with any proofer :wink:
