Aftermarket vs Genuine 437M?

I see a few people running replica 437M's, but don't quite get why?

The genuine OEM 437M alloys are 10" et 40 rear, 9" et29 front, and should fill the arches perfectly. They are also forged.
Im going to guess the replicas are cast, is there an advantage to the reps apart from price?

So I went for the Genuine 437M alloys in the end for the following reasons:

Wider than replicas, 10J and 9J with correct offset will fill the arches perfectly with no need for spacers
Forged, stronger and lighter

I Suspect reason Most go for replicas is due to cost? I'd Sooner have genuine all the time, Cost can be prohibitive in BBS and other top end wheels. Even compared to Genuine BMW alloys :driving:

I'm keen to see what they look like fitted. How much did you pay?

Circa £800 used with tyres

Was that eBay or via forums? I'm looking at spending around £800 for some new wheels. If I can get some OEM forged wheels for that price then I'll be happy.

I currently have 9.5j rears with MP4S tyres and only really struggle for traction in 1st and 2nd. Upgrading to 10j would help launches even more.

That was via Ebay, but they also sell for the same price on forums when they pop up every now and then. Yes definitely worth it for the price, given they are forged and 10J!

Daft question maybe: How can you tell that they are genuine?

2 Ways:
1. Replica 437M's are usually 9.5J or 9J with some offset, genuine's are 10J ET40 rears, 9J ET29 fronts
2. Appropriate BMW stamping and part numbers on the interior of the wheel spokes

Its usually a good indicator when the person selling them actually owns the car they came off

If you want to be 100% sure you can also weigh them. Genuine forged 10j wheels should be around 10kg. Everything else will be 12kg.

Forged wheels are a huge step up. Lower weight and way stronger than the cast wheels that we get on the Z4.

@sunnydays > what did you buy to get the 437s onto your car mate please? I want to do exactly the same as you with budget available next month. I want 437M and Pilot Sports. Did you need spacers?
Thanks in anticipation

You have them fitted yet? I'm curious if they'll rub under compression.
Oops did not see this, they are being fitted in the coming week, I will update you when they are. Worth noting the car will also be on eibach springs, so slightly lower than standard at the front :)

Hi mate,
I have not fitted these yet, but you should not need spacers, these should sit 12mm further out than stock on both the front and rear which imo is just right. As far as I know these should just go straight on, having these fitted later on this week and will update.

Itching to get a set of these. Lighter, wider and stronger than my current cast wheels.

Yeah me too mate. But it's a minefield to those unwise to these matters. Ride height, spacers, tyre sizes...... Very confusing.
My 35is is completely stock. I want to work out how to get genuine 437's onto it with decent none runflat tyres and what i need to buy/do.

Sorry for the delay on this guys, been super busy, will post pics up when I get a chance

I have had these running on stock springs,, no rubbing under compression, or any rubbing that I have noticed. Obviously ymmv depending on tyres used and springs. These fill the arches nicely and look great

So these will literally bolt on to your car. You can put your existing 225 / 255 tyres on but it will have a slight stretch on the tire. I would reccomend 235 / 265 non run flat tyres. Pilot Sport 4S is a great tyre.

I've just got some genuine 437m fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres. I picked them up for £500 and had them refurbed in silver since I hate black wheels. Cost £850 (excluding tyres) all in which is a bargain for wheels which cost £3500 new. Really can't see why anyone would bother with reps when genuine ones are available for so little.

Went with 275/30r19 and 255/35r19 to try and keep the rolling radius as close as possible front and rear. In hindsight I probably should have gone 245/35 on the front since there's slight rubbing at full lock on the wheel liner.

The change going from crappy cast wheels to forged is amazing. The weight difference is staggering. Even though the new wheels are 1/2inch wider with larger tyres they still weigh 5lbs less per corner. The ride is much less crashy than before which I'm guessing is down to the weight loss.

I'll post up some pictures when I get around to cleaning the car. It's currently filthy

What shade of silver did you go for? Need to have mine refurbed but can't decide what colour. Did you retain the diamond cut finish or powder coat?

And 5lb reduction per corner is great, translates to even more considering it is unsprung mass

The weight is noticeable but the biggest improvement is the ride. The VMR V710 wheels made every bump in the road feel like a pothole. I suppose the suspension had to take the force of a 13kg wheel, now only has to deal with 10kg of wheel.

I should have changed to forged wheels years ago. Probably the biggest improvement in overall driving since the runflats came off.

The refurb was done by "The Wheel Specialist" in Nottingham. I went for a colour called hi power silver. They're a silver powder coat over a black base. I decided against a diamond cut finish because I wanted more longevity, also think it's too blingy for my tastes.

TWS were good, would definitely go back there. I spotted a couple of imperfections in the finish when sealing the wheels but overall happy with the finish. Only time will tell how the finish holds up against the elements.
