Aftermarket Subwoofer Install

Has anyone here installed an aftermarket subwoofer in their Z4 roadster? I was thinking about augmenting the bass in mine, though the trunk seems to be the only place large enough to put an enclosure. Wondering if there will be enough bass transfer through the trunk since it's sealed quite good.

The boot isnt sealed, with the roof up the only thing between you and the boot is the plastic parcel shelf which i'm looking at removing as it vibrates like mad with the roof up and shelf in the down position. You can get plenty of bass with the roof up but alot is lost with it down like any convertible. Heres my boot but i'm looking at upgrading it all and making a flush fitting custom box that will hold a single JL audio 12".

Which system do you have in the car now? 6 or 10 speaker?

Do you know what system you have currently installed in your Z, if you only have the basic 6 speaker you could use the 2 storage bins behind the seats as BMW in their HIFI systems, I

The link should hopefully explain everything and give you some ideas.

I've got the 10 speaker Hi-Fi...not sure if it's the Carver upgrade or not. Either way, the bass is ok from 50 Hz and above, and the highs and mids are fine. I'm just missing the slam that I'm used to in the sub-bass and clearly those 6.5" drivers aren't going to cut it.

I like your install, despite it being raw. I want to try and avoid anything too tacky looking, though I'm not willing to pay big bucks to have a custom fabricated box behind the seats (one high-end place offered to do this to keep the "stock" look...way too pricey!).

So when you're driving around top up or down, do you feel that you get sufficient bass transfer into the cabin? I'm just concerned that the trunk is sealed off too much by plastic, etc for enough air coupling to take place with the interior. For instance, I don't want all the bass energy turning into trunk vibrations and not sound. Thus, I'm wondering if I could poke a hole in the back of the storage compartment to vent the trunk. Another thing is that the sub's can't interfere with the convertible top. Thankfully, it doesn't take up much space.
