Aftermarket Seats

I am thinking of getting aftermarket seats for my car. I have the standard leatherette seats (it was the last manual 2007 model in the province, so I had to take it), and they are total rubbish.

I was thinking of Recaro Pole Positions.

My question is how the seating position compares to stock. I assume there is no height adjustment. How can you know before buying the seats whether you will be able to see properly? I am 5'7", and I am not sure if these seats will fit properly.

What about comfort? This is my only car, so I want to be able to fit in the seats comfortably in the winter with a coat on. I'm about 170 lbs (geez...this is starting to sound like a personals ad).

Do you miss having the rake adjustment to recline the seats?

Also, can the seat heaters be used with this seat?

Finally, is there any other seat that anyone would recommend for daily use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Some M seats sold on ebay last week, I cant remember the exact price, but less than a £1000,

Yep - but they are really rare and hard to get

One question I would ask about aftermarket seats is the connection to the car. The seats have a large plug that connect car to seat and operates many things from sensing passenger and seatbelt, controlling airbag activation, seat pad heating, etc. I tripped these sensors simply by turning on the ignition with the plug disconnected so would need to be sure how such was handled by aftermarket and what if any coding is needed

In Canada they can. Sadly, my car has sport package and premium package, yet still does not have leather. Oh yeah, and the list price in Canada, thusly equipped is $59,000. You Americans don't know how lucky you are!!

One other thing I was wondering is whether I can even swap out the seats, since the seats have weight sensors for the airbags, and I believe, side airbags built in.

You don't know how lucky you are. I wish I didn't have leather seats. Mine had premature wear when the car was only a couple of months old. I've seen many 3~4 year old Z4's and all their leather seats look like crap.

I'd have picked BMW's leatherette (not the one on the Z4. I mean the one on the E90/92 3-series) instead of leather if I had the option.

I had leatherette in my '96 318i. I liked it and it seemed to wear better that real leather.

Those are good points. Thanks for the input. I'm not such a fan of the leather, it's just that the seat is so flat- I feel like I'm riding in a '57 Chevy or something. There is barely any lateral support.
