Aftermarket PDC

Has anyone fitted an aftermarket PDC system to the Z4 or indeed a BMW? I know it has been discussed a few times on the forum with a few manufacturers and comments flown around but I am intrigued if there is a way to integrate the aftermarket system into the car and use BMW wiring etc? I know CJ has mentioned that the cars come pre-wired and its a case of plugging in sensors or something similar? Is it as simple as that or what is required?

BMW do a rerofit front PDC.

Yes and it's one ugly looking bit of kit....
My plan for this Winter is to retrofit a front PDC system using OEM sensors. Given that BMW offer the retrofit kit then the loom must be in place to connect up to. I guess I could even use the retrofit kit as the base and conceal the sensors. Anyway - that's for long dark evenings

For someone starting from scratch I'd go with one of the cheap and well made aftermarket options, that are designed to be an easy diy fit and do the job just as well

I really liked the look of this one that someone posted a while back: http://www.parkingdynamics.co.uk/Installation

So is front PDC possible ?

Of course - see AlanJ's post above showing the part number and kit...

pvr - that's a neat solution.

What I'd like is the OEM set up as we have on x5's (and no doubt other models of the era) that starts when you engage reverse, only then activates the front and then remains on front and rear, until you drive off and reach approx. 8mph.

where does it go/fit? as long as you can't see (most of) it then it looks good?

Is it just that one part that's needed? Seems very cheap to me...

Anyone got a photo of it actually fitted?

Never seen one either other than in photos, it looks crude.

Had a look at a pdf I have to retrofit the rear PDC and from that my assumption is that you already have to have the rear pdc fitted and it simply connects into the existing loom, either at the dashboard near the drivers side or picks the loom up in the engine bay. That connects into the pdc controller built into the right rear wheel arch.

Are these looms pre-wired in all cars or only if PDC option has been selected? Does OEM PDC come through the stereo speakers or have its own dedicated 'speaker'? I like the look of the kit PVR posted and there are other manufacturer's with similar kits around. I am just wondering what if any OEM elements I'd currently have of the PDC system currently.

Doesn't look like it's an option on the coupés though - or not according to RealOEM.

OEM is going through the speakers. On the X5, rear proximity is heard through the rear speakers, front proximity via the front speakers.

I can't say if the loom is prewired in all or not. My instinct is that it is not as the rear retrofit PDC comes with a complete loom from boot to dash.

The pdc uses a gong on the underside of the dash in the facia panel, not the speaker system.

I don't see any reason it could not work on the coupe?? No doubt BMW could confirm that.

The trick here will be for someone to go to the parts department and just ask them to print off the retrofit instructions associated with the front pdc. It will give detailed instructions and pre requirements and the dealer can confirm which models it fits. I'm just not near for a while.
