Aftermarket lighted shift knob

Planning to switch to an aftermarket shift knob that’s weighted and lighted, but curious about the install process. Seen a bunch of posts / videos on non-M cars that say you just pull up really hard on the OEM shift knob to remove it … wouldn’t that damage the working for the lights on the M cars?

Also - the wires on the new shifter are much shorter than the OEM (based on what I’ve seen online). Is it as simple as cutting the wires on the old knob and wiring in the new one?

If anyone has done this and can offer some basic instructions, I’d appreciate it

It’s a long time since I swapped mine but iirc, you can disconnect the wires from the knob by lifting up the leather surround before yanking it off!

I bought some wires and a new connector from BMW so I could extend the wiring on the new knob as I didn’t want to butcher the original.





I think the wires came with the pins attached, but it’s been 12 years so don’t quote me on that!
