aftermarket alarms for Z4

So I dropped my Z4 off yesterday at a reputable Viper alarm installer to have an alarm put in. They called this morning and said they've exhausted their resources and spent 3 hours trying to get the alarm in, but are giving up. None of the wires that are supposed to control the alarm functions in the car do what they're supposed to, and their Viper technical support (over the phone) has run out of ideas. My car is prewired for an alarm, but that may only help with installation of an OEM alarm. Has anyone had a similar problem? Am I limited to only buying an OEM BMW alarm? This is certainly a surprise to me. Help!

I had looked into getting an alarm system for my previous Z4 and as I recall the Viper system was not compatible. My current M Roadster has the BMW alarms system and it seems to work quite well.

Thanks for the reply, WLH.

Apparently BMW has set up the Z4 to be unfriendly to aftermarket alarms. A second shop I just visited was unsure if they could install an alarm on the Z. Since my closest dealer is 1 hour away, I wanted to get an aftermarket alarm installed today. I guess I have no choice but to take a day off from work and spend all day at the dealership + the travel time. :headbang: This is not a good solution for a working person. Thanks BMW!

Also, BMW tells me that they do not offer an OEM paging alarm. So, an important feature I wanted on the aftermarket alarm, I can't even get on my new luxury car with the OEM alarm. This makes little sense.

wiseguy, yes the lack of a paging alarm is the biggest weakness IMO and was the main reason I was looking at Viper.

2 questions-

1. can anyone recommend an aftermarket alarm with paging function that has been successfully installed on their Z4?

2. If you had the OEM alarm added to your Z4, what did it cost you (parts and labor)?

I'm getting one or the other installed on Monday, so all info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Anyone?

I'm determined to get this done, no later than tomorrow, as I busted a young punk trying to break into my convetible top on Friday, at 10:00 in the morning outside my office (a very busy business district). He fled when I confronted him and I then went inside to call the cops. The punk then went a few blocks over and successfully broke into an SUV. Based on my description, and the fingerprints he left on my windows, the cops found him, and he's spent the weekend in jail, under felony charges. After a lineup with 4 eyewitnesses, he also confessed to a home burglary that he'd committed that morning within a mile of my office. He had numerous Ipods, sunglasses, etc. in his pockets when he was arrested. I hope the lil **stard gets the book thrown at him.

Thanks,

I've currently got an OEM PN 65730302424 alarm on order, for a very low price, <$50 (Tischer). It does not have the proximity alarm, and it is designed for the M, or the Coupe. Many reports say it will fit, some are not as optimistic. I will be trying when it arrives. It looks like it is worth the try - and you will get the chirp lock. Stll no paging though....
