After my first Z4, facelift or not

Hi everybody,

Been looking around the forum and there are some nice ones on here, ive been trying to find one where i live, but being on the Isle of Wight its a bit hard. I know to find the one I want I will have to go to the North Island (mainland) to track one down :D . A couple of questions I would like to ask are, does the facelift model address the problem with the roof motor or is it still the Z's achilles heel, is there a mod you can do to fix the cause, Also would people recommend the 4 or 6 pot. As it will be used for weekend use only on a 24 mile by 12 mile island, mpg won't be a problem, at the moment I am leaning towards cream/red heated leather and manual box with a set of ellipsoid 18" wheels. A big ask i know but there is one out there somewhere waiting for me.

I want to make sure I go to look at the right one, as ferry costs are quite high .

thanks for reading and can't wait to get one.

cheers Garry

Welcome- I would recommend you get a 6 cyl engine as the are more reliable , sound better and are similar in economy to the 2.0 4 cyl. Have a look at AlanJ's great buyers guide.:

Also have a look in the for sale section here as most cars are well loved and you can read up on their history through old posts.

The roof motor is an issue on pre and post facelift. There were some mods on the motor between them but the problem is the drains and I don't think they were changed. Keep the drains clear and as long as the motor is currently OK it should last. The other issue is the sticky steering and that is better on the post facelift.

I would say get a 6 pot. Very nice drive and a lovely sound.

As above, roof motor common issue regardless of age. Keep the drains clear and you should be OK though.

Engine wise the 6cyl M54's are bullet proof. The 2.0i have issues with cracked manifolds and this can be a real headache. Some have had multiple failures. Facelift 6cyl N52's can have HVA issues.

If it were me I would look for a pre facelift M54 3.0i even though my last car was a 2.5si N52

Hi Gary

Good to see someone else down here - I also live here .

I've put my car up for sale in the past - provisionally sold before but the sale fell through ( nothing to do with the car ) . Oakwood Prestige cars in Newport is also keen to sell it for me on a commission basis but after thinking it through I'm not keen to risk having it standing on their forecourt for all and sundry to test drive it etc - if I'm honest I suppose I am a bit reluctant to part with it.

I have just put it on Pistonheads ' Here's the link - it's not got red leather or heated seats but it is a 3.0 with an impeccable history.

If you interested PM me and we can arrange a viewing .
