I found out I have an auto dimming rear view mirror. How did I find out? Well I took the wind deflector off to clean the inside of the rear window and left it off, noticed on the way home from work this morning. Wonder what else I'll discover.

Ah so THAT'S how you clean the rear window,
I have been in some weird positions attempting to clean mine

Must admit only found out the other day that I had pockets on the back of my seats! :D
Will save me shoving everything behind them now.

Funny, I thought mine had stopped working - along with my auto dimming wing mirrors - however it would appear that's because I have been leaving the wind deflector in all the time

Never understood how auto dimming mirrors work and can't say I've actually noticed any difference. What's the theory; do they physically dim like a Polaroid glass?

Yep - bright lights shining from behind causes them to dim very quickly. I believe it is photochromatic (???) glass, and I guess the sensor must be on / around the mirror if having the wind deflector in interferes with its function. There is a little clear plastic 'window' on the top edge of my mirror, but I thought that was the auto lights sensor...

Correct!

The ambient light sensor is in the mirror housing, the one in the mirror itself seems to be the one that picks up on headlights from the rear. If you cover the ambient light sensor you'll see your mirror darken.

And if the mirror develops any marks or dark spots get rid of quickly before the liquid escapes and stains the interior. Problem with three series, might not effect Z4's
