After a Coupe... Advise please!

Hello guys/gals,

Long term reader but this is my first post.
Currently have a 2.2L, Toledo Blue, getting on a bit at 120,000 miles. Had it for 3 years but after something with a bit more pace!

Originally wanted to go for a Roadster 3.0si however, have really struggled to find one with low mileage. Also, saw a Coupe in the flesh at my local dealer and you know, fell in love. Again though, have struggled to find one with a low mileage and within my price range (8-10k)
Would need to buy from a dealer as got to part ex mine.

My questions:
What is low mileage for these cars?!
I've been looking for 60k and below but very few around. Would be doing about 12k a year in it.

Is Full BMW dealer history essential?

Anything in particular to look out for when viewing the car?

Will the Roadster devalue a lot faster than Coupe?

Is the Coupe likely to hold its value in 3-4 years time?

Cheers, would greatly appreciate your help.

Jean-Luc

Imho, if you are going to put 12k miles a year on the car i would worry about 'low' mileage as its the milage that will impact the rate of depreciation. I doubt that either roadster or the coupe will depreciate that much now, higher initial purchase for a coupe so its all relative.

Buy one that has been looked after, servicing etc and check mot history, rather than focus purely on mileage.. They're 10 year old cars now so 90-100k would be considered average mileage and given the age a few things are going to need sorting e.g. rubber perishes so bushes, and check suspension

I bought one with 53k miles last September. I found low mileage ones to come at a significant premium and paid £12k for mine at the time. I've put another 5k on it since then.

I'm banking on getting £6k back from it in 3 years at 12k a year.

I also paid a premium for mine (just under £14k) as it was low milage (24k) and came with all the toys and 12 month warranty. I've had mine 12 months now and not really had any problems with it so far. Changed the oil and had a wheel alignment done and thats about it. Probably the benefit of buying a low milage coupe. I'm pretty sure I won't ever be selling it, but in 3-4 years, if I do 10K miles per year I'd still hope to get £8-9k back (at least)

I do keep an eye on the price of the coupe and not really seen them fall in the last 12 months. I expect that a good one will not depreciate that much as they become rarer.

Looking like I'm going to have to push up to 12k mark for the condition, spec and colour I'm after.
Off to see a tasty Montego blue Coupe on Friday, 60k miles, Full BMW service history.
Fingers crossed it's a goer as I'm travelling a fair distance.
Price is £12,000. Sound about right?

Still worth a haggle though...make them an offer and see what they come back with!

100% I would check the history too as even though its "Full BMW History" I expect it hasn't been serviced every 2 years along with brake fluid.

It should be in the order below then it repeats, services are at mileage intervals around 18k from memory or every 2 years which ever comes first.

Oil Service, Inspection 1, Oil Service, Inspection 2

Brake fluid every 2 years

Coolant should be changed too but I don't believe its in the schedule.

Given the cost of an inspection 2 at an independent isn't too significant, don't avoid a car just because it is due one - if you get it done yourself you also get peace of mind that it has been done properly!

I'm considering ignoring the oil services and just alternating between inspection 1 or 2 each time either the inspection or oil service light comes on. Given the fact that I'd be taking it into a garage anyway to get the oil changed I think I may aswell have an "inspection" too at the same time... Not sure if anyone else does this though!

Why do you "need" to part ex? Can't you sell yours privately? You'll probably get more money that way.

The one I'm looking at is an 09 reg so has been serviced 3 times. Haven't managed to find out the extent of these services.
Dealer is going to service and MOT for me aswell before I drive away
They've also said the car is @ BMW today getting an appraisal and a full check up?
Dealer said it's what they do with all their cars that are brand new in.
He said they can spend 1k-2k on their cars to get them in prime condition before sale. He reckons the Zed should fly through without much work given the condition.
Cant say I've heard of dealers going to these lengths before.

Sound too good to be true?

Can't really afford the insurance/tax on both. I pay monthly for both of these. I'm 24 so insurance premiums are relatively high. Not sure I can risk the 2.2 being sat on the drive if it stuggles to sell.
+ my girlfriend will not be happy with 2 sports cars on the drive!

Guess you have to take their word, one thing is for sure regardless of what they spend to get their cars in 'prime condition' they will want a profit, so I'd take the 1 to 2k with a pinch of salt
Hope its the car for you and everything checks out

4th service Should be an inspection 2, I'm guessing its due brake fluid too.

An inspection 2 plus brake fluid at a specialist will be under £300

I would tell them not to bother and get some cash taken off and get it done yourself, you will know its been done properly then, also a good time for another garage to have a look at the car and highlight any potential issues.
