AFE Induction kit group buy

I'd quite like a bit more induction noise, and I've heard good things about this:

http://www.ca-int.co.uk/variants-Y2FyX21ha2U9Ym13JmNhcl90eXBlPXo0bSZwYXJlbnRfaWQ9MjgyMw==.html

Trouble is I'm struggling to justify the price!

I've contacted CA Technologies (who are the only UK-based sellers that I can find) and I've asked them about a discount for a group buy. Apparently, since they don't add a significant mark up on these units they cannot offer a discount themselves. However, they did think that AFE would be able to offer some kind of discount depending how many of us signed up.

If anyone is potentially interested, let me know so I can give an estimate of numbers to CA. They will then let me know what discount AFE will offer. Of course, if no one else is interested, I'll just have to bite the bullet... :D

That one that Peppermint sold was a bit rusty though, and I got the impression they all did?

I've only heard of Peppermint's having this problem. This is the least expensive route for increasing induction noise, and most people seem pretty pleased when they fit it, some even likening it to the CSL...although I do wonder how many people have actually heard a CSL :P
If I end up buying one, I'll be sure to inspect the quality of the finish and if it isn't up to snuff, I'll return it.

Has anyone cleared up the MAF issues? I managed to find an American company through ebay that seemed to be offering these kits in different forms (with a load of bullshit waffle about performance gains). But from that I could see there was the option of ordering with an oiled filter or a dry paper filter. Would this clear up MAF issue?

I've not heard of dry filters causing MAF problems, and from what I've read oiled filters seem to cause problems when re-oiled (rather than as they come from the factory) as excess oil leaves residue on the wire of the MAF. A few people on here have fitted this intake and I've not seen any reported problems. That said, some people on other fora have talked about rough idle with aftermarket intakes, whilst others with the same systems have denied it. It's difficult to be sure if this particular system is likely to cause any problems, but I would be surprised if a dry cone filter would make any difference except to induction noise. Maybe Booner or someone else who has this set up can shed light on any problems?

I would be interested as I am currently looking around for an induction kit. However, before I committed I would like to see some numbers and be assured there wouldn’t be any fitment issues.

Had mine for at least 6 months now. No rust (even left outside in winter) and no maf issues, just lower MPG from my right foot :driving:

Fitment was easy enough and I'm useless

Could 3.0 owners get in on this, if they provide for the M54 engine?

Thanks for the feed back Booner.

JasonLHall, if you're based in the US, you can probably buy this cheaper there as they are imported to the UK from the States.

Ranski, I can ask when I let them know potential numbers.

How abouts we all chip in and buy one, then we copy the heatshield (what I meant was, use it as inspiration so as not to breach the copyright  ), stick the forum logo on it and flog 'em on here, job done!!

All you'll need to do is buy your favourite cone to go with it.

Would be vastly cheaper overall.

probably but, still wouldn't mind knowing the cost just in case.

Love this idea. Is there anything more to it than this? I'm sure we could buy the raw materials and between the forum someone must be able to fabricate or know a company that can.

BMWZ4MC, I'm undecided but do quite fancy one of these - interested to know the possible discount. I could be a yes if a significant discount is possible. (Assuming we can't cobble up z4forum replica)

M@r]{ thought this was a good idea too (bottom of page four): http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34217&start=45
I'd be up for this and it would definitely be cheaper, but I don't think I can offer anything to the process of making them!
I'll wait to the end of the week to see how many people show interest then I'll see what discount AFE can offer...

Spoke to my friend with the Cnc factory and he said if he had one to take measure ments from he could make the considerable cheaper. He also said looking at the pics he could make them look a lot better too!

I'll have another chat with him but come up with some ideas about how we get hold of one and ink oas them on.

M@r]{, there are much better photographs here:

Most of this isn't too complicated, just a cone filter and a box to house it with suitable mounting points. The hard part would be the connection between the filter and the intake system as this needs to include the MAF connection. I wonder if adapting the OEM system would be possible:

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DU92&mospid=49422&btnr=13_1174&hg=13&fg=20

I suspect that the desirable noise increase (after all I don't think any of us really expect power gains) is due to the more open airbox. It isn't really possible to acheive this with a panel filter (except by drilling holes in the airbox before the filter!!).

I wonder if it would be possible to fit a cone filter to the end of a modified OEM intake system just before the MAF sensor, and fabricate a new (more open) box around this. It would mean cutting the airbox off the end of the intake hosing just in front of the MAF and using a jubilee clip to attach the cone filter to this amputated stump. It wouldn't be pretty, but it could be if it were enclosed in a nicely fabricated air box.... Does anyone think this might work? :?
