Aero skirt request

I’ve got a feeling that I’m not going to accidentally stumble upon a pair of aero skirts that are available for reasonable money, so I’ve decided I’m going to alter my standard ones. Is there anyone in the Fife or Lothian area that has aero skirts that I can get an mdf profile of. I just need a closer look at the shape. I promise I won’t damage anything.😁

If you can wait 2 months, you'll have a choice of cars attending the queensferry meet
I can get them for under 400 at my local dealers if that's of any use

Who is your local dealer?

Hi Silva1, have you physically seen the aero skirts sitting on a shelf at your local dealers??

When I started searching a lot of dealers showed them in stock on their system but then found it was a discrepancy and had to cancel my order... :(

I wouldn’t recommend you modify the skirts.

Try Mark Mchgee at Douglas Park for discounted parts.

They stopped making them in 2016. Nobody has them now. Not even overseas. Many have tried and failed. If I make an arse of mine, I’ll replace them.

Ahh that sucks...
Maybe get a second set of OEM skirts for cheap (from a breakers or something) and then modify those?
Then if it doesn’t work out you can always put your originals back on the car...

I’m interested to see how this develops

I recently placed an order and paid, only to wait 4 weeks and be told they’re unavailable - and BMW Thailand told me that included checking the Asian warehouse supplies as well as Germany

Instead of a refund I put the amount paid towards an M bumper, but I still want aero skirts

Has this been a recent thing? I bought mines within the last 12 months

Yep, I spoke to a dealer last December and he told me I'd just missed out on his last set, which he'd sold 2 days prior. He checked with Germany and said they had no further stock and they'd been made NLA.

In that case mines won't. I bought mines back in May time with zero issues. Guess that isn't the case now

So, the plan is to shape the cill on the car and take it off to paint it. My next question is how much does the cill need to flex to remove it, and what clips will break while removing it?

From what I remember they unbolt quite easily. But they are quite flexible once off the car. I wouldn't build it up with filler. I would look to expand it out with GRP. Although you may be better off making a mouldand making up GRP items as a whole.

Is it thermoplastic? Just wondering if you could vac mould it out and then re-finish.

I’ll be using expanding foam to form it, then fibreglass over the top. Filler then paint.

Instead of filling and moulding your existing sills have you considered these sills from Mad motors?

https://www.madmotors.co.uk/body-kits/bmw/bmw-z4/ntc-bmw-z4-nl-sideskirts.html

They appear to have the same contours of the aero skirts and from the photos look like they just need the small air ducts to be filled in. It might be easier than trying to mould your existing sills.

My thoughts exactly.... but as I’m in Bangkok I have to wait till my next UK trip to try to figure this stuff out and I’m not sure when that will be

That said, I have thought multiple times about how hard it would be (top gear reference) to custom create some aero knock-offs..... but then I usually remember how Jezza, Hammond & May were often ambitious but rubbish (there’s another one).

I know for a fact I’m not skilled enough in this area to deliver an end product I’d be happy with

Good find. I have googled body kits before without much success. My skirts are in poor condition anyway, so think I will butcher them while it’s sorned. If I fail, which may well happen, these will be next months purchase.
