Advice regarding New York Hotels

OP, you may have got a better deal if you'd have booked through Virgin Holidays/BA Holidays as a package holiday as these big players can pass on better hotel rates as they block book out multiple rooms at a time.

I can heartily recommend the Hotel Metro on W35th Street as this is a nice art deco hotel in a great location with a roof terrace looking out to the Empire State Building, includes a buffet breakfast & have stayed there many times, as is usual in NYC the rooms are relatively small but clean, NYC is a magical place & you really wont be spending a lot of time in your hotel room anyway.

If the Hotel Metro isn't available the Comfort Inn right across the street is ok too but I'd take the Metro in preference.

As per the what others have said, Manhattan is where you want to be, but if you possibly can then stay around Herald Square/Macy's or Times Square, both are buzzing & well connected.

PM me if you like as I have lots of ideas about what's great to do if you have limited time or can post up here in this thread if you'd prefer.

AirB&B might be an option too. You rent apartments, houses etc by the day and prices are often very close to hotel prices.

W in Union Square. Also The Warwick is pretty nice as is Essex House and the Hudson (although this one has tiny rooms but a great bar!)
 
I stays in The Affinia Shelburne in Murray Hill a few years back... 10 mins walk (max) from Time Square (and close to Grand Central) and a lovely hotel:

I went in March and we flew with Virgin Atlantic and stayed in The New Yorker which was reasonable. Close to Empire State and Macy's. From memory it was £900 per person for flights and accommodation.

My friend who I referred to earlier stayed in the New Yorker. He said it was ok.
 
I'm sure you got it covered but don't forget you need to get ESTA visas for both of you before you travel.

Last 2 times I have stayed at the Holiday Inn on (I think) west 53rd. It's 10 mins to Central Park and Colombus circle, 15-20 mins to Times Square, some good breakfast places close by, not badly priced and reasonably quiet.

Top tip, visit top of the rock and not Empire State, much better view IMO.
 
Serviced apartment sounds worth a look. If you've already got the flights have you considered Air BnB? I've used them and they have always been cheaper than similarly located hotels and sometimes even hostels too.
