Advice re accident repair

Hi,

an idiot at work has crashed into my Zed at work this morning. - (at least he came in to tell me I suppose).

- he'd swung round into the speace next to me, misjudged a hit bumper, front alloy, all down the front wing and the passenger side door.

i'd assume £2k damage at very least.

I will post pics when I get some.

BMW are taking a look tonight. They mentioned an option of a 'like for like loan car' rather than the usual 106 or fiesta.

- I think that this is done via a 3rd party insurance company that then pursues the other sides insurnac ecompany for the cost of the loan car for a week or so.

Has anyone done this? - are there any obvious pitfalls that I have not seen??

Thanks.

Z5,

Sorry to hear of your accident - the pain will ease.. :(

My son had the same thing happen to him recently in his Mini One in Leeds. Parked in the works car park in a proper space and another driver reversed into him and took out the back bumper and hatchback. Other drivers insurance company sorted it all out including a loan car and allowed us to use the main dealer for repairs. In fact the repairing main dealer supplied the loan car - a new Mini One (now that was a mistake as my son is now looking longingly at the new Mini.....). Not saying you will get a Zed but something equivalent in terms of size and capacity. This has made it easy as no paperwork or nonsense for us (that's me really...!) to deal with. Can I suggest you contact the other drivers insurance company who should sort all this for you and I'm sure you repairing dealer will oblige as its all cash in hand to them. As will all of these things make a note of who you speak to (full name)/date/time etc just in case

People on the VX220 forum i use swear by Europa Consultants. They make sure you get a like for like car and dont get messed about by the opposite company. This way it will not tarnish your accident history also (as even though you arent at fault, the scummers will stull up your premium/risk). Many people would argue that using these companies increase our premiums... However many claims are 'outsourced' anyway apparently!

Heres a link to the Europa website;

http://www.europaconsultants.co.uk/index.php

And a list of their 'like for like' loan vehicles:

Group A - Nissan Micra 1.0, Ford Ka 1.0
Group B - Ford Fiesta 1.2, Vauxhall Corsa 1.2
Group C - Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus
Group D - Renault Megane Scenic 1.5D, Ford Focus 1.6, Mazda 3 1.6
Group E - Vauxhall Vectra, Ford Mondeo
Group F - VW Golf GTi (perhaps the only one close to the Zed)
MPV - VW Sharan, Renault Espace

Looks like a reasonable service but nothing more than the other parties insurance should do for.

Sounds slightly scammy to me? A '3rd party insurance company'? So not YOUR insurer?

If your insurance company offers a loaner, or you have 'legal cover' then its not a problem (as the legal cover pays your insurer for recovering additional costs), but this sounds like the dealer is aranging the 'loan' as a rental effectively (probably expensively) then someone else pays the bill and negotiates with the other party's insurer to get their money back plus a bit - both the dealer and the 3rd party have to benefit after all. Its ambulance chasing by another name.

If its a no-liability claim and the other party's insurer doesn't buck, the rental will get paid I guess, otherwise I suspect the '3rd party insurer' swallows the odd one, but make sure theres no come-back on you if they do lose out.

But look to your conscience  ....this is what drives our premiums up and up and up.....

When i had an accident that wasn't my fault in July this year, my car was being repaired at Sytner BMW for a month and i took a loan car from them (well, Swift, the company BMW get the loan cars from), not my own insurance company. They said they would give me like for like, and they were giving me a black 2.0 Z4 roadster, until my insurance company said i couldn't have it because of my age, even though i have a 3.0 Z4! So i ended up with a 2009 320d auto!! They then sent the £3500 bill to the guy who drove into me's insurance company and they sorted it, as well as my £11,000 repairs!

As long as you are older than me, they will do what they can to get you something the same or similar enough. And they have been a pleasure to deal with, considering the circumstances that the dealings came from. It has all gone very smoothly.

£3500 for a months car rental. Nice litle earner, paid for on your premium and everyone else's. 7-8 months of that and they've covered the cost of the car already (bought at a fleet price no doubt).

In fact run the sums - lets be conservative and say they might pay £25k trade for a 320d. After a year they would sell it for what, £17-18k? making total cost of ownership approx £8k - lets call it a round £10k with consumables etc..

If the car is only rented for nine months of that year at the rate you quoted, it brings in £31.5k, less the £10k = £21.5k income on a single vehicle.

And of course the stealer aids and abets the situation by taking a whole month to effect repairs........

Not getting at you Lucy, its just our insurers being taken to the cleaners by someone out to make a fast buck, then charging us for the privilege.

One thing in this thread earlier is that the guy came and told you what he had done. I think that virtually me entire "accident" history has been damage to the car whilst I was not in it and never a sign of the person who did it. The last one I was actually in t he car in a car park with the engine off making a phone call and the bugger did the same thing as in this thread then tried to deny it!
