After 15 years of driving family mercedes and bmw i can now choose a fun car. BUT i do a lot of driving, about 25k/year. Several comments that i have received is, would you choose a z4 for a day to day car rather than weekend car. Am test driving one tomorrow but i would be interested in your help please.

Hi and welcome,I have used my e85 Z4 for the last 6 years as a daily driver doing around 14k miles a year, and have enjoyed every mile of it.
I would certainly say go for it.

Welcome to the forum, these are BMW's and can be used daily. The older Zed's may need some degree of refreshing, but they should be fine as a daily :)

Welcome. :) All the Zeds wear their miles well. Fewer creature comforts in the older models, plus a more sporting ride . Mine will never be a daily, but many are. Good hunting.

Hi, the original zeds are fine for daily use although the replacement e89 is considered a more comfortable place to be :P

Hi and welcome.

I don't daily my Coupe, but certainly wouldn't have a problem using it that way. But it does mean I can avoid it getting dings when parked!

The 2003 to 2009 E85 (Roadster) and 2006 to 2009 E86 (Coupe) models are generally thought of as more "Sports Car", whereas the later E89 models (with the folding metal roof) seem to be considered a bit more "GT".

I suppose it depends what flavour you prefer.

Hopefully your test drive will help you decide - good luck.

And let us know how you get on.

I daily drove 2 coupes over about 4 years, absolutely loved it. I do 25k a year at least.
The 3.0si coupe was particularly fantastic, a great all round balance of power, fuel economy, running costs, luggage space (humongous boot for a sports car) and relative rarity on the roads.

Despite being a die hard e85/6 fan (the first shape z4), I have to admit the e89 is way more comfortable, I'd love a 35is as a daily.
All Z4s are running 3/5 series engines, so pretty reliable.
Lots of info and friendly help on niggles and known issues on here though, I've learnt a lot and saved a few quid too.

Just test drove the new M20i - surprisingly nippy. Need to be careful on cost because of company tax. Loved it and have a couple more questions now. It was sunny and warm today - what are they really like in the wet and cold. It will be my everyday car. Also, what are the lights like. I currently have the BMW adaptive lights and love them for winter driving. I have a choice of two Z4's without a new build either with the visibility pack - which would be my first choice but not tech pack such as heads up display. What are the new car lights like. Any thoughts on the heads up display which compromise to make?

Sorry - first world problems!

Thanks again.

I wouldn't recommend the e85 for regular use but my E89 is far better for it

E89 is a perfectly drivable car daily, so long as you don't need to transport more people/'stuff'.
I definitely recommend getting a well-used E89 for say 10K over a brand new -any- car.

Oh right, so the OP has tried a G29 20i - hopefully someone who has one might be along soon.

Mind you, they won't have had much experience of one yet as they've only been around a couple of months!
