Advice on where to live..

Thanks for all the advice so far, I will be checking out all the areas suggested.

Here is the flight path map from Webtrak:



Red being arrivals and green being departures. If you log in you also get numbers of flights over the period you select. There are small pockets inside which seem to be free from the paths such as:

Stoke Poges
Uxbridge
West Drayton
Hayes
Stanwell
Chertsey
New Maldon
Greenford
Wembley
High Wycombe
Bray
Bracknell
Ascot

I'm also using the Defra site to track noise from roads (example below from Walton-On-Thames):

With 2 million quid to spend...

I would retire and live way way way away from London,in a spectacular house..

And still have a million quid to play with

Spend £1m on a family house, then buy 4 houses at £250k each obtaining between £1000 - £1500 a month depending where you buy them

Amen to that , time to look at the treadmill & realise there is a life off it 8)
Not been before but I spent the day in Suisse Normandy today & came away totally hooked with the area , , not much good to bluestreak for commuting into London but WoW on the landscape , scenery , towns & property on offer :oops:

That looks lovely Andy. Probabaly not the same in an Astra Van as an ///M though !
Is it a chill'in or building trip ?

I hear on the radio today that Bristol was voted the most friendly/neighbourly City, with Belfast second, London last.

Aye van time not Z time Alan but saw enough there today to think it would be a great area for a drive out should a group of guys with sports cars ever get the opportunity :oops:


Great news for those with property in Bristol then :wink: Bluestreak himself has indicated that area is of interest so why not get in there with his £ ?
 
Your map is missing the Gatwick flightpaths though which affect a big part as well.

Only takes me 35 mins to London bridge and I live miles out :D
 
How about in Buckinghamshire, somewhere near Henley on Thames, my sister lives in a little village called Frieth, lovely area and close enough to London and M4/M25

For some reason webtrak do not hold Gatwicks data, here is another source for their flight paths:

Moving too far out really isnt an option while my grandparents are still around as my dad visits them every week in Finchley..
 
Just a thought, but rather than focussing on flight paths at this stage would it not be better to find a area you like with potentially suitable houses and visit the area before writing them off due to a flight path?

I live under part which is heavily shaded red yet have never once heard anything flying past. Noise attenuates very rapidly with distance so unless you are close to the airports the height of the planes will reduce the noise to an unnoticeable level - roads / trains / fire stations / schools etc will have more of an effect to a house.
 
Agree that Yorkshire is lovely, but it is not easy to get to as the motorways are way too busy. I would go there more often if it was not for the journey to that part.
 
Does seem to be lots of focus on flight paths... i think they only really relevant when you're actually near the airport's takeoff/landing zones where planes are lower and thus audible.

When you've lived directly under the flight path for 30 years (and I mean directly under it as planes are travelling at less than 1000 ft above) it makes you really focused away from it. Obviously theres no escaping plane noise or flight paths entirely while also staying within 25 miles of London. The issue is looking at the webtrack screenshop I posted, many of the areas around West London are heavily affected by planes taking off / landing from 5am. Every 3 minutes from 5am daily I can clearly hear the planes landing.
 
You never mentioned if schooling was going to be an important factor. Finding decent schools will change the location as well as many inner London schools are not rated very well.
 
Indeed a good point pvr. It will be in the next few years. We don't have children yet but are planning on it. Also another factor is square footage of the property. Currently we have approx 5000 Sq ft usable in our house (ground and first floor only). Many of the places I've seen are sub 3000 for around 2 million. While I appreciate the area may be a lot better and there is some compromise to be had on space, I don't think we can go below 3500 Sq ft unless there is drastic scope for expansion...
 
Am I missing something, but you'll continue to live with parents? You're talking about children etc? Surely you'd want to live on your own in a smaller more manageable place?

My grandparents lived in a 6 bedroom house near Virginia Water and needed phones to find each other. Not ideal really, most of the time they were in a 10 square metre study with a tiny TV and books. Get an apartment in London, a manageable house for parents with support for grandparents (2 house plot).

What am I missing?
 
Also remember flight paths have a habit of changing...

the Gatwick ones changed last year, and are about to change back (if not already).

Our old house used to suffer alot from the Gatwick traffic, but our current one doesn't - odd because it is just 250 metres (seriously) north of the old one...

also about 30 minutes from either London Bridge or London Victoria, where are we - Redhill right under that blue line on the flight path map you showed above, so as others have said I wouldn't focus so totally on flight paths...
