Advice on selling.

Hi Guys,

I thought I'd get some advice before posting in the "classified" section.

I'm looking to sell my 2006 roadster. I bought it from a main M dealer in April 2012 as a fun car for sunny days and holidays :D However, shortly after my business became hugely busy and I really haven't had the time to enjoy the car. My wife then "obtained" the car as her main for of transport, and I just kinda forgot about it. She now has a wee VW Up! and I want to get shot of the Z4.

The car has 54,500 miles, spec is full (sat-nav etc.. ) I took it in to get an MOT 2 weeks ago and it passed with a minor advisory on the brakes as it'd been sitting for a couple of months and there was a bit of rust, which is now cleared as I've driven it for the last few days.

There's a little bit of body work (honestly due to my lovely wife's unique driving style!) - Front splitter could do with a respray due to fading paint, little tiny dent on rear arch, and the rear middle brake light could do with replacing as the rubber is getting a bit old.

Here's the kicker - As I've not been regularly driving the car, the Service II is a bit overdue (Around 5k). So my question(s) are :

1. Should I get the service II or leave it and price appropriately?

2. Would there be any merit in getting the niggles fixed or again price with that in mind?

I don't want to come across as being "shifty", but I really really just have forgot about the car and my wife is not the most careful of lady owners.

Apart from the above the condition is great, interior, apart from a little wear on the driver bolster is immaculate.

Also, any idea for value without the work being done!

On the face of it it sounds like an unloved example due to late service and a few internal/external cosmetic issues. Many of the Z4Ms are weekend cars, special cars and so I'd like to think they are well maintained over your average daily driver. Without decent images, full spec list and knowing if all the other services were done on time (and by who), it's hard to give an accurate ball park but others will offer thoughts I'm sure.

As for fixing everything and servicing or just selling it as is it comes down to how much time you want to invest/have available versus what kind of price you're after: are you wanting to get the absolute max or just a fair price? Selling as is and needing a big service means even pricing low it might be hanging around as there are others for sale which won't instantly need £500-£1000 spent on it for an inspection II – and that's not taking into account the service is 5k too late. It sounds like you could spend £1500+ to service, paint the front and sort any dings out, plus maybe fix the bolster... I think that's how I'd go then the only issue would be a late service, rather than late service, InspecII required (££), front needs painting and dings need sorting, plus wear on the bolster. Small list beats big list I guess, and I think you'd sell it quicker unless you really priced it low, like £10k.

£10k :o maybe a tad low there but you either get the car mint & serviced so spend circa £1500? or sell as is with a risk factor to buyer ?
By the way similar cars,similar miles,similar spec have not sold around £13k over the recent weeks a ask of £11k/£11500 may see some interest as there are certain buyers who would love to get in at the cheaper end & spend time & cash fettling the car :thumbsup:
 
Firstly once you have read the advice here I would delete the thread before you do a for sale ad. :wink:

You have two choices sell as is for a bargain price so someone can take a 'punt' on it £10k or less or get it in good shape to maximise your sale price before the summer ends, although I bought mine in winter at a premium price as it was so good! Service, full MOT, front end and dings repaired and alloy refurb as we know all are fooked with you wife driving! :D Price a possible 14/15k

Mate, it was extremely LOVED until I started working every hour in the week. :(

I took me ages to find the right car when I decided, and I still think the colour and spec is good, and for a 9 year old car 54k isn't bad!

It's a time issue for me tbh, like I said, I don't want to sound shifty, but yea, I'm thinking of selling around the £10-£11k mark.

I can believe it but the headlines won't look good in the advert or when you're explaining it over the phone to Joe Bloggs... Pics help a lot and those pics look fantastic :thumbsup: A lot of it is routine maintenance for any car: door dings, front end respray from scuffed 'fangs' or stoneschips, plus sorting any wear to bolsters. Only real issue is late/due inspection II, but priced accordingly it will shift, especially if it still looks like it does in your pics :thumbsup:
 
Granted condition looks very good there but there is no way that you will convince anyone that the car was loved when scheduled servicing is overdue, so be prepared to take a hit in that regard.
 
Whats the rest of the service history like? So when you say 5K over for inspection 2, has it done say 20k and over 2 years then?

Yea, I know mate. I remember what I was like when I was looking.

Timeline of car :

Bought in April 2012 after a LONG search Ben is very happy!

July 2013 - Ben becomes overloaded with work, car sits sadly in garage.

September 2013 - Wife get's new job and there's no train/bus, Ben agrees as a temporary measure to "LEND" beloved wife car.

April 2015 - Wife, who's now re-names car Betsy BMW, decides she can't be bothered with the heavy clutch, fuel bill, and tax and buys a VW UP! casually mentions to Ben that Betsy says it needed a service, and she presumed I knew about it! Ben goes to check car, and asks about the battle scars Betsy has accumulated, dear wife shrugs and goes back in house... Ben decides the wife is more useful than car and forgives her.

Pretty much sums it up...
 
To clarify for anyone looking with intention to buy has the car gone from pick up in April 2012 to now without any service ?
If so how many miles in that period ?

I'll need to check the book when home, but the run in service was done bang on.

Wow... Seems low but I can see the logic...

Good luck, I'm sure you won't need it at that kinda money.. You do need the right man for it though..
 
Just to be clear guys.

I'm not using this forum post to sell the car, I'm honestly looking for advice on a selling strategy.

I will list it in the site's classifieds when I'm ready and probably Piston-Heads. I may even trade the car in. Also, I'm not looking to get greedy, but I'm also a bit out of touch on current values.

When and if I do list it, it'll be with full disclosure and photos of any issues.

My issue is simply wether to get the work done or not and sell with a price that reflects that.

Can we also assume the car is on its original discs or were they fresh when you purchased the car ?
You've indicated your pricepoint which should be enough to tempt someone :thumbsup:

no way would i let anyone woman in my life treat my hard earned items like this.... said women tend to get away with taking the piss over numerous things as the wimp like men in their lives allow it.... get your wife to pay for the damage she's done, and pay for the service, then give the car the attention it deserves and sell it for decent price :-) 10k due to your wives neglect is something i couldnt swallow, please don't be that guy.
 
I'm no wimp bud, but my wife would batter Mike Tyson in his prime!! :D LOL... Plus, I can't work the washing machine!

Mr Wilks, I don't think 13K on the same oil is a huge issue, however, I have personally had the oil changed at an independent at the same time as the 2014 MOT but that is not reflected in the service book, and I'm making no claims to validity of that as I only have an invoice. and the brake discs and pads were all replaced when I bought the car, which is invoiced from Eastern BMW.
 
Guys what's an 'average' condition MR worth with 54k on the clock in a nice colour combo (which I think this is) and with the usual FSH? Then how much would you knock off for a missed service – for those of you that would still buy it at the right price with a missed service? £500? £750? OP with that figure then you can work out if it's worth spending approx £1.5k sorting it or not. And whether you want the hassle of sorting it all.

Would be great to see some new pictures of it to see if it does look a bit unloved or not: with those you'd get a much more accurate idea of what it's currently worth.
