what about an e39?

Could go one better and get an '///M' E60...

(I think he might've got the mileage wrong too!)

Tbh I've looked at 530 E39's, I think they're a little old in the tooth now and not very quick considering how thirsty it is, just want something a bit newer really. Thanks for the input tho Neil :)

Guys/Mods, this 'Saylden' is a Spammer, can we delete him (if he is human) please!

All of his 5 posts are quotes and within he puts a link to 'aftermarket parts' or something similar...along with a pointless irrelevant comment that doesn't make any sense.

I think it's time he pi$$ed off!! This is what he's advertising:

aftermarket parts

Copied in my post between fairly and practical...

Wondering if you guys can help, I know how we all like talking cars so thought this might interest some of you!

Looking at spending between £3.5k - £5.5k (max) but ideally around the £4.5k mark on something that is quick, reliable, not too expensive to service/maintain and not in the £400 odd tax bracket or 20mpg average! Not a 2 seater so needs to be fairly aftermarket parts practical and really under 80k miles. Also under 10 years old, the newer the better. Ideally I'd want a decent amount of spec, so cruise, soundsystem, parking sensors, BT, heated seats etc etc. So my short list is...

Mazda 6 MPS (55 reg)
Volvo V50 T5 (manual)
Skoda Octavia vRS (Mk2)
Ford Mondeo ST220 (55 reg or older)
Saab 9-3 2.8T Aero (probably won't go for this!)

I have a leftfield choice of a Honda Civic Type-R GT Mk2 (FN2 series) going reasonably...that'll probably be my first choice but need a contingency plan.

I think anything German is too old and high miles and also more expensive to maintain.

So what do you think?

I will surely purchase Mazda 6 MPS if I have so much money

SAYLDEN YOU ARE POND LIFE!

I honestly think I would head down the type r (new shape) option ... great value , look smart , and good fun... being a 2.0 still good on a run. Most of all if it does not work out well your be able to sell it on no probs, therefore long term should have better residual due to the ongoing demand.

I was looking at them the other day when I noticed a thread on one.. for 5.5-6k cracking car

P.s also you could get a red one ... have matching socks then :D

Woody, did Mark's Type-R fall through, or did he just not get back to you?

PM'd :)

How about a Skoda Octavia Vrs, big boot , VAG running gear, pretty quick and reasonable to buy :D

Cheers Pete, one of these is on my maybe list. I did have the Mk1 1.8T one as pictured above, really decent car. But not really a fan of the Mk2 looks, plus out of the box it's not as quick or powerful as the 6 MPS, which on top offers better equipment as standard too.

I'm really struggling now to find anything that can better the 6 MPS on power, practicality with the 4x4 (also I've found out the seats do split and fold!), equipment as standard, price for year & mileage, £270 tax, decent on insurance, mpg isn't too bad, servicing is pretty cheap etc...

I know it's not the best looking car out there but I quite like the 'wolf in sheeps clothing' thing! Still has twin pipes (annoying that they're little ones within big ones!) top mounted intercooler with bonnet bulge. Plus I got a little tired with all the Skoda jokes...

I went through exactly the same conundrum your going through Woody as I needed something that could carry a bike. I so almost bought a civic type r, I had one from new before and as mowflow says they are absolutely fantastic cars, the only front wheel drive car I preferred to that was the Integra type r I had before it in terms of out and out fun and performance but as an everyday car the civic was better.

Anyway I digress, what I ended up buying was a 53 plate 2004 (204hp engine) e46 330d touring m-sport with a manual gearbox and 90k on the clock. I took a chance and bought from an auction figured it was worth 5k all day long and was chuffed when the hammer dropped for 4.3k!!! Got the wheels reconditioned, serviced and swirl flaps removed and all in it was a few quid over 5k... It just went over 100k and it still feels great.

Its maybe not as tight and frantic as a CTR but its a whole lot more comfy, has about double the torque of the CTR and the best bit is it can do a trick which the CTR just cant, it is a drift machine! Yes I know you can get ample of lift off oversteer in a CTR but there is nothing quite like seeing the look on peoples faces when you come broadside round yet another roundabout in what people perceive as a family estate wagon! Hunt about you can find them, took me a few months but so glad I didn't get a CTR again. But then again maybe I'm just getting old, did I actually mention comfort as advantage, sigh... :-)

They don't have an LSD though do they DONDP? I can get my E46 320d sideway on wet roads but only with a bit of momentum and not through torque alone as it just spins up the inside rear wheel.

No there is no LSD so does require a bit a flick to induce a good weight transfer rather than power alone in the dry, a damp road is definitely more fun... That and my tyre choice helps ;-)

Don, thanks very much for the recommendation, it's been a strange few days. The type-r from this thread:

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48401

Was tempting for £5k but turned out to have accident damage and tbh after driving a few I just didn't like the way they went. You had to really rev the nuts off them to get it going, only have 4 seats, everytime you move the front seats they forget their setting, very harsh ride, poor rear visibility, I could go on...as it turns out the guy selling it has had a change of heart and is now keeping it.

So, I'd short listed it to a Octy vRS Mk2 or Mazda 6 MPS. I'm pleased to say I went for the latter...

I just couldn't find anything of this age/mileage/quality/performance/spec/practicality/reliability etc for the same money. Fair to say though it's no Z4MC, not even close, but.........

as I said it's been a very strange week. It looks like I'm going to be moving to the East Midlands, have a new job lined up and will be closer to the wife's family, so we can start a family. Will be happening over the next few months so need to get the house on the market and find something bigger up there. So you know what that means

It's going to get the full works before I sell her which will be full Inspection 1 including valve clearances and appraisal of the car, fresh MOT and full detail. So will be pristine and perfect for its new owner. Ad to follow later this week... :( and will officially be for sale in early-mid April.

What a crazy week!

Audi S3. Ticks all the boxes. Performance, fun and practical. Can pick up a 2003 for 5k, with about 70k on.

Well I've got the MPS as detailed above now but thanks for the recommendation Moffmo :) I think personally that shape A3/S3 is a bit old in the tooth now, £5k £6k I think would be a struggle to find a tidy unmolested decent old shape S3. Little on the small and boring side for me too...Picking up the MPS Thursday.

Interested to know what you think of the MPS Woody. There's one round my way but you don't see many about. Lot of car for the money by all accounts.

Inkey I'll get a report up in the next few weeks. I'd loved to have gotten something like yours, mmmmmm 335i :) (How you getting on with that btw?) but unfortunately £££ is needed on more boring things at the moment, well a house deposit really.

But I agree, so much motor for the dosh, IMO nothing I could find was able to better it. In gear power is epic, 0-60 has been quoted in many reviews as under 6secs, loads of toys, reliable etc. It just looks a tad boring and doesn't have a blue & white propellor badge!

I think there was something like 800 produced for the UK so not too far off Z4MC exclusivity!

I have had two Mazda 6 ,we have a 2.0 at present. They are excellent value for money. If they have a weakness it is that they could do with better rust proofing underneath. The model you are buying suffers from rust around the rear wheel arch.
I used to wipe an oily paint brush around the arch once a month to keep the rust at bay.

Cheers Maxman, I'll bear that in mind, I DO NOT want a rusty car! Glad to hear you've had a good experience with the 6 :)

I like that Woody - could you not find one of the bright yellow ones

Then I'd get all the custard & banana jokes and ridiculing from Lux, Maniac etc etc... TBH I'm not really a fan of yellow cars unless its something very exotic (lambo etc) but I do like the Z's I suppose :) (Carol, Quadracer...!)

Oh and they only did the 6 MPS in black, red, silver and grey; no other colours so I'm not sure where you're getting this bright yellow theme from (unless you're saying its a taxi!)

 You've defintely bought a quick, rare car. Add in reliability, low service costs and japanese gizmos and you've got yourself a very shrewd investment and freed up vital house deposit cash.

The 335i is good thanks. Only been out properly on one trip but as you'd expect; plenty of power and makes a nice noise :driving: Not a patch on the M as an experience obviously, so still trying to get my head around that.

My mistake I thought they came in yellow but then realised that was the sport rather than the MPS - used to be in the Mazda Dealer in Aberdeen quite a bit and a lot of the 6s they had in seemed to be in a yellow at the time. But clearly not an MPS
