Advice on ipod connection please

Sorry, I know there are a lot of threads about this, but can anyone point me in the right direction to get me started.
It seems a bit of a minefield.

I have searched the net for companies that can do this but am drawing a blank.

I want an ipod connection in my 2006 Z4 2.5si. I want to control it through the steering wheel control, like a proper ipod dock, so not just the line in headphone socket as some of the retrofits.

I have business cd player, bluetooth phone prep already installed, and have been told it's prepped ready for cd changer, even though it hasn't got one.

What do I buy please and what do I do?

many thanks in advance!!!!!

Dension, Dice or Intravee. Go to Car Music Centre, like Ice Direct and get them to fit it for you if you are nervous about doing it yourself.

Job Done :) Or BMW can do it for £350+

I bought a gateway 100. Did try the dice but it didn’t work particularly well, very temperamental had two sent to me and neither worked. So swapped it for the gateway. The gateway works by wiring it to the back of your stereo. I don’t have sat nav so relatively simple. Do have blue tooth and steering wheel controls though, which work with the gateway. Just need to pull out the vent above stereo, can be tricky then unscrew the stereo, clip in the connector, wedge the Gateway behind the stereo then drill a hole through the inside of your glove box. Feed the wire thorough then just plug in your ipod which sits in your glove box.

Talked to ice direct and they recommended a parrot MKI9200
But seems a bit OTT to me. I don't really want extra stuff on my dash board, so the dension looks like a really good option.
Anyone else had a good experience with this dension, or more importantly any bad experience?
thanks

What do people think of the Parrott Mki9200? I was looking for bluetooth phone/ipod connectivity for my '05 plate and it was recommended to me over the Dension/etc. I don't have MFSW but not sure if the Parrott will look out of place.

The previous owner of my zed fitted the BMW iPod interface. I think it is brilliant.

I have the Dension Icelink Plus which is basically the same unit with a few difference, had it for 6-7 years and used it in both previous BMW's.

Works well with Non Nav Head units and gives 5 playlists plus access to all other playlist via menu.

+1

+1, except I did it myself, and it couldn't be easier to install

Do you get full functionality with it, like track names, mfsw control etc? I presume in place of cd changer. Any idea how much?

Thanks

Connects2 is the cheapest option, it works like the BMW kit described. access to playlists and works through MFSW too.

About £50 new or £30 used on eBay. Easy to DIY fit.

It is the cheapest option, something like the intravee and the higher end Densions are into the 100's of £.

I am not sure that track names are available on the non-Sat Nav head unit with any of the iPod solutions. You can have track names on the Sat Nav screen though, I think it is the Intravee that has that functionality.

Connects2 is about £100 straight from them.. where did you get the £50 price from?
(I had connects2 in my last car, and wanted it in this, but the price was close enough to OEM to make me not bother)

You DONT get the tracknames on the stereo, but the mfsw works fine and yes, you loose your changer (unless you do a bit of messing around with electronics).
You can set up to five playlists (BMW1 to BMW5), which can be accessed with the 1,2,3,4 & 5 buttons on the stereo.
The 6th button allows you to play all songs on the iPod.

Dealer supplied they come in at £150.
I have a spare non-DSP one for sale, at £80.

Dension GW300, about £150 IIRC... gives you text display on the Business CD head unit and you can browse by album, artist, playlist* and track. And MFSW can be used from volume and browsing.

*Unless you are going to use playlists almost exclusively I wouldn't bother - they clog up the album and artist lists when browsing.

The GW100 is cheaper but doesn't have the USB connection. I'm not using the USB as it doesn't support iTunes DRM.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the Audi/Bose set-up.

According to Dension's product compatability list, they don't support BMW's with DSP: http://www.dension.com/download.php?file=bmw-01-04-10.pdf

Is this really the case??

I believe so. I am sure that when I bought mine there was an Alpine adapter you could add on to sort out the DSP compatibility issue. I just did a quick search and couldn't find it. I think if you have DSP it seriously limits your options.
