Advice on Driveshafts Please

Hi everyone. I'm after some advice from the E89 gurus on here. I have a 2009 23i auto. that failed it's MOT on Friday due to the ABS warning being on and therefore the parking brake not operating. On inspection they found that the ABS ring on the NSR is cracked and the OSR has been rubbing on the sensor. I spoke to a local specialist who recommended replacing both driveshafts and one or both of the wheel speed sensors.

Looking at ECP and GSF there seem to ne a few different options of driveshaft available, but it's not clear to me if the driveshafts are the same on both sides, or if the left and the right are different. Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance, Alastair

Realoem will have the definitive status for your exact model based on date of production

The handbrake problem might actually be unrelated to the ABS fault and in fact it needs a software update. Quite common.

If it helps save some £, you may be able to replace just the ABS reluctor ring:

(You'd need to check if the E9* ones are the same - I suspect they are as it's the same platform, I just have this in my watch list for my wife's car so it was easy to find as an example)

Not able to help with whether the drive shafts are the same on both sides or not, but just had mine replaced for the same issue. Shafts had corroded and wore the ABS sensor down and caused it to fail. OEM Drive shafts took 6 months to be delivered as they were on back-order from BMW. If you find good aftermarket ones, go for them.

That's possible I guess. However, the ABS / ASR warning started off as an intermittent issue that would go off after a while. When the warning was displayed, the parking brake wouldn't work - then, when it went off the parking brake started to work again. This happened several times before the light eventually came on permanently. Hence my assumption that they're linked.

The variation is drive shafts seems to be just different diameters of the shaft itself, everything else looks to be the same, either 25mm or 38mm.

I saw these and (as a certified cheap b@st@rd) would have chosen this route. However, I called into my local specialist on my way home from the MOT failure, and he said he no longer fits the rings due to issues in the past. He finds the fix only lasts a few months.

Any one else have experience of this?

Hi. It's E492823
I now see your problem…I don’t know why so many versions are listed for a 23i..I can understand different rear diffs mandate different size / length drive shafts ..but ..the 23i came with only two diffs that were externally similar?
