Advice on buying used E89

Hi All,

Hoping I'm keeping to the guidelines of the forum; if not, let me know and I'll remove the post.

I'm looking to swap my 66 plate f22 2 series for an older E89. Mainly because I may be starting a masters soon so want to save a few quid by getting a cheaper car.

I've got no experience in Z4's though and not loads with cars generally really...

I've seen a 2010 23i with 70k miles on the clock for £9k. It has a FBMWSH and been services and health checked recently.

The 70k mileage scares me though as it just sounds high to someone with little experience to me. I'm used to PCP's so actually owning a car with 70k miles on is something i'm unsure on...if i do 30k miles on then look to sell, will it turn out to be a pricey 3 years in terms of the depreciation?

Thank you for reading and again, if I have broken guidelines, please let me know

Will

70k on a reliable 6 cylinder is nothing buddy, pretty sure every following post will tell you exactly the same thing, n52 is a well proven engine, I just bought a 23i with 68k on it, I'd have happily bought one with 90k on  I just sold my n52 powered 3.0si to a very happy chap on 92k. Just find one thats been well looked after and you will be golden.

Nictrix on here has a lovely, well maintained 23i for sale around your budget with a slightly lower milage of 60k..I'd take a forum car over any other type of sale every day of the week https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=124735

If low initial purchase price and low operating costs are your main criteria you could do a lot worse than a 23i...the chassis and this engine can rack up huge mileages with very limited issues...

This time of year .. focussing on the 23i you should be able to but one for a lot lot less than the one advertised..

Because they are early E89s they tend to have not as many goodies fitted as later ones..

If goodies are an issue you should climb a learning curve on those as with most BMWs everything is optional..

Surely the depression on a older E89 will be significantly less than any PCP deal

Dont be put off with 70,000 miles.
Our 23i with 60,000 actually feels smoother than our 35i with 16,000 miles.
While searching for models make sure you know the difference between the SE models and Msport models. The cheaper ones are normally SE models.

59 plate 23i poverty spec here. Bought at 58k, currently on 92k. Apart from rear springs and new battery, just standard consumables and no headaches. Still feels as strong as when I got it.

Short answer, what everyone else said, no issue with high mileage examples

FWIW, I bought a 2009 3.0 SE Manual @ 74k in 2011. I kept it until earlier this year @ 107k. It was maintained according to the service schedule, by a main dealer and never missed a beat. I had the steering rack changed out, along with the rear lights within the first year FOC, but apart from that it was a smooth ride. The car was garaged and rarely used in wet\winter weather so unliekly to see any water ingress issues. When sold, the diff was a little noisy (only noticeable roof-up), the Dual Mass Flywheel was also starting to make itself known and there was a swishing noise when cold, presumably from the Cam Chain.

First off welcome to the forum Will.

As everyone has said 70K miles is nothing for the N52 engine. I used to have a 325i with the same engine that was still running fine and pulling well on 139K. I replaced it last year with a 330i with the 3 litre N52 and that is performing perfectly after 114K miles. My 2nd E86 had the same engine and that was also performing faultlessly on 91K.

The one you mention certainly doesn't look cheap, but then it may have a great spec if it is an M-Sport model and has desirable options like heated seats, etc. Personally I'd look at more than one so you can compare prices and specs, etc.

Your only issue with depreciation if you put another 30K on it will be the general aversion buyers in the UK have towards cars with a six figure mileage recorded!

Anyway good luck finding the right one.

Firstly, hello and welcome

+ 1 If looking for one you’ll not bet much cleaner than this car

I bought my 23i off of here knowing it was much more likely to have been pampered and have any issues addressed properly. You also get the opportunity to look through the posters history and find a more detailed information on your possible purchase than you’ll ever get buying a car off of anywhere else. If the cars had an issue the owner will most likely post about it either to seek advice or advise other owners.

My 23i never gave me any bother except a snapped rear spring. The sound of the straight is also fantastic :driving:

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say a sincere thank you to you all; was really chuffed to see so many people taking the time to advise me.

Taking in to consideration everything said (including Nictrix's great car which I can see has sold, well done to him!).

Has anyone got any experience with apple carplay screens being installed? I saw a 2010 car available with a nice looking, custom-fitted screen for apple carplay which I found appealing but wasn't sure if it's something I should steer clear of (pardon the very low-quality pun)
