Basically dealer is only willing to cover the cost of one spring under warranty.
As far as i was led to believe springs are usually changed in pairs. If i am wrong i stand corrected.
Any advice gladly received :)

Yes, it is usual to change them pairs.

However it's up to the dealer how to cover the cost for the 2nd spring (dealer goodwill, BMW goodwill, warranty claim, owner).

Do you have a good relationship with your local dealer, and taken your car there for servicing/maintenance in the past?

Just off the phone to BMW.
The dealer is going to check the spring on the other side to see if it is cracked.
I know for a fact it is not cracked but the paint covering is worn/damaged so it is only a matter of time till it goes.
As for the dealer,i really dont want to comment on the forum.
Its funny how i had the same problem about 4 years ago with my other Z4 and both springs were replaced.
I think its just the way things are nowadays, gladly take your money but give you piss all in return.
As you can no doubt guess i am not best pleased     :headbang: :headbang: .
Also they excpect me to cough up the best part of 1k in april for a extended warranty,i will have to think long and hard about it.
Rant over     .

before i put eibach springs on my ///m i had the two rear springs go and the dealer only replaced the broken one both times, the first spring went at 15000 and the second one shortly arter that! :o

my offside one went and was replaced... nearside still going strong some 20k later...

no ill effects :D

Thanks for the help guys :D 8) 8) .
The car has only done 12700 miles so it really isnt a mileage thing, just bad design or crap metal who knows.
I just find dealers attitudes very hard to swallow sometimes.I wish i hated cars and just drove something completely normal and plain.
I BLAME MY DAD :driving: :driving: :driving: :driving:

I was refused the second spring change by the dealer. Someone on here posted in reply to my question similar to yours that if its been a manufacturing defect in one then there is no proof the second one needs changing. Was basically told it's an old fashioned thing to do them in pairs. I'd be more comfortable had I got both done, piece of mind that I'm not going to have to fork out for another one in the next few years.

Quick update.
Broken spring replaced, passenger side spring inspected after phone call to BMW customer services.
I know for a fact that the coating on the passenger side spring is cracked and the metal is starting to corrode thus the spring will fail in the immediate future.
Dealer has told me that BMW does not cover corrosion. They will not replace this spring as it has not failed ie cracked. To me this is nonsense as this spring is going to fail the same as the other one. When i looked at the passenger side spring i measured the broken off piece from the drivers side and the powdercoat covering has failed at near enough the same place.
All in all pretty poor service froM BMW all for the cost of a spring.Dont know whether its worth chasing this up any more.Any ideas guys????.

I took my BMW to Battersea (park lane) and they changed both rear springs when one failed, no fuss. I suggest you persevere with the existing spring until this fails or otherwise go to another dealer that is more willing to take your business. It's warranty work I'm assuming so if these guys don't want it someone else will I'm sure...some dealers are a pain to deal with others a pleasure!

Dealer replaced bot of mine when only one failed, car was 3.5 years old with 26K on clock. Didn't even ask for the other to be changed.

What didn't make sense was what the SA said "We changed both because the car has low mileage" but I wasn't going to argue, and all under warranty.

It was very obvious with mine, every time I hit a bump it gave off a metal "ting" sound...not good

I am going to name and shame the dealer Harry Fairbairn Irvine branch.I can honestly say they are the worst dealer out of all the cars i have bought to deal with.As people have said previously why not change both springs the other is about to break. When i had my previous Z4 had the same problem and both were replaced no problem(different dealer). My auc warranty runs till April and decided to definately take out the BMW warranty and hopefully get some use out of it.
As for noticing if they are broken just listen for an annoying rattling "ting" sound as tjlazer says.

Are some more liable to go than others? I checked mine last week when I had tyres fitted and the car was jacked up and they looked as good as new, black paint intact and nothing to suggest imminent failure (touch wood). Car has done 35K all weather miles.
