Advice on a tracker

Hi Guys,

Apologies if this question has already been qasked, but in my defence, I did search but it dodnt throw anything up.

I'm looking to have a tracker fitted, and wondered if you guys/gals could recommend anyone you've used / had experiences with.

I think on some of them you can set it to get text alerts, if you car's moved, going above a certain speed etc, but not sure how you would get these unless it was actually reported as stolen??!

Because my car will be at the airport for 3 weeks of the month I'd feel more comfortable about it. (I use one of these car parks where you park it yourself and take the keys with you ) :D

Why not have a read on http://www.tracker.co.uk and look at the differences in the 4 various systems there.

I won't post details of my system/systems on a bulletin board, but am very happy with what I have.

As far as I'm aware the versions that advise the police are based around the vehicle having moved without the engine correctly started or running. The passive one's are triggered by Tracker after a theft report by the user and police and static tracking points (docks, etc.) locate it if in range.

How much do you pay for your tracker service?

I have a tracker fitted in mine, but when I read the booklet for it, the prices seemed rather high, costing more than it would save on my insurance. But I've seen a couple of people mentioning much lower yearly costs, so I'm wondering if the price has come down in recent years and my booklet is just out of date.

I paid for both trackers a one off life time fee. BMW dealer fitted it.

That's the way to do it - same here. All you need to do IIRC is have a 5 yearly test from then on that costs around £80.

Im still confused about which ones you can get and which ones txt you without it being activated by a centre somewhere after you've reported it

Do these trackers actually work as I didnt think there would be a huge police chase, certainly I think the attitude of our local police is we've got better things to do with our time then chase cars.

Do these trackers actually help recover your car?

So, there's no BMW Assist in Great Britain? That's roughly equivalent to LoJack for car recovery.

Having done a fair few searches for insurance over the last week, a tracker seems to be making practicly no difference to my premium at all
The system I have fitted is pretty old too, not worth bothering with for my circumstances it seems.

As for the ones that text you, it seems you pay a premium for the trackers with extra functions like this, the sytem I've looked at had an extra £50 on the price of the unit they install but the subscription was the same as the one where you have to notify them of the theft.
