Advice Needed! Z4 S23i or 2.0 T??

Hi all,

I am thinking of a Z4 as my next motor and i wonder if anyone can help with my query;

The 2009 - 2011 (i think) have 6 cly traditional BMW engines ( sdrive23i being the one I would look at) how does this compare power, mpg, noise wise with the newer 4cyl counterpart?

I viewed a 2012 one on Saturday and the 4cyl looked a bit lost under the bonnet tbh. I would expect the power delivery to be similar to my current 2.0 tsi Scirocco, but after having a 325 many years ago I don't know if i would like a bm with a 4cyl?

(Granted I haven't driven either model yet and I will - i just wanted to ask any owners for their comparison thoughts really!

Cheers in advance

There are members out there who have owned both, so I'll leave them to give you a real-world comparison. However, if you're looking at the 23i sDrive, don't overlook the 3.0i. It has the same fuel consumption figures and CO2 output but is markedly quicker. Downside is that it will cost more to purchase and there are less around to choose from.

Good luck. :)

The 3.0 - that's interesting. As this will be a company car the co2 comes into play a bit - will the 3.0 be a higher road tax bracket then?

The 20 has a lower CO2 output than either the 23 or 30, however if it were a company car I would go with the 28i then you get the best of both

If a choice between 2.0 and 2.8 its clearer cut, but from when I test drove the 2.3 compared to my 2.0 the 2.0 was better on driveability and pick up, I would go for the 2.0 and more toys over a 2.3 as perfromance is negligeable.

Tim.

I own a 23imsport which I love and recently tried a 20i which was thinking of buying but was not impressed it felt lighter and not so solid I missed the noise from the engine which gives the 6cyl models caracter so am now thinking more along the lines of a 30i or even a 35i if I can find one at the right price but at the moment am happy with the 23i :driving:

I imagine the reason the 2.0 felt lighter is down to the 4cyl engine being set further back so better weight distribution and turn in, the 6cyl weighs heavy over the front axle

I agree Tim and am sure the 20i goes fine the one I drove only had 46mls on the clock and I did,ent give it the full beans but I just could, ent get my head round the fact there was no lovely engine roar when I put my foot down :o

If its just a case of 2.3 v 2.0 then read this lot....

If its a case of should I go up to the 2.8 then this is the one for you.....

As you will see from my posts I've gone from a 2.3 to a 2.0 and have no complaints at all. Ok the sound is slightly better with the 2.3 but the 2.0 understeers less as the fornt end isn't so heavy, and has more low end grunt. Having said that I would have gone for a 2.8 if I could have found the right car/spec with a decent deal, but there wasn't one around that I was happy with so I went for colour and spec over the 2.8 in a colour I would have regretted.
If you need a bit more ummph you can remap the 2.0 you can't remap the 2.3!!

I would find a car that is right for you (colour, spec, and cost) and if it's the 2.8 great, if it's a 2.3 or a 2.0 you won't be dissapionted in either.

Some great info there - thanks v much!

One question - am i right in thinking the 28i which has been referred to is the 3 litre model? I thought the model line up was 20, s23i, s30i, 35is?

The 2.8i is the 2 ltr but tuned more than the 2.0i and it has replaced the old 3.0 ltr 6 cylinder. Just as the 2.0i has replaced the 2.3i.
