Looking for a bit of advice about best procedure for keeping a cherished number plate.

Have decided to sell the wife's RX8 (anybody want to buy one? lol) but we want to keep the "cherished"/private plate for the next car. Would you recommend taking it off before putting the car up for sale, or assuming we actually sell it, how quickly can one deal with DVLC in changing it?

Also, when we go ahead and change the plate, will DVLA appoint the original plate/reg number back to the vehicle?

Many thanks in anticipation.

I did the transfer before I sold the car but I was directly putting my plate on the new car. Directgov website had good information on this as did the DVLA website. You could transfer it and not put it on another car but there is an annual fee if you intend to retain the plate while it is not on a car. I think the transfer fee included the fee to put it on another car at a later date but dont hold me to that :!:

The DVLA do appoint the original plate if it is still available which is handy because you dont need new plates making up, assuming you kept the originals!

Your only option really is to remove the plate before you sell the car and put on retention which IIRC will cost £115, but wont cost when you come to put on the new car.

I more recent times I have had the original plate put on but unless the windows are etched this is not always the case and any age related plate maybe issued.

As Eyup says, put the reg on retention, it makes it so much easier to transfer onto another car.

When I sold my previous Z, the new owner had to wait about 4 weeks before the plate was taken off ... Next time, I would remove the plate first and then sell the car.

Many thanks for the advice guys. Will put the current plate on retention as advised. Fingers crossed they allocate the original number back as I kept the plates!

Thanks again.

As advised (and as you said you'll do) changing before selling is a lot easier.

Re: previous plate - you should get the same one back, but you can request it by letter with your retention
