advice needed please

Hi all, looking for some advice. Im looking was looking to buy a 2006 facelift z4 in a 2.5si sport. Took one out on weekend for a test drive and wasnt really that impressed with the power. I then tried a 3.0 2004 pre facelift semi auto and was really impressed but never had an auto before, just wondering what everyone thought of them and if there are any downsides. What did you do on the test drive? There shouldn't be much between the old 3.0 and 2.5si in terms of point to point speed, but you probably need to keep the latter higher up in the rev range (between 4k and 6k rpm) to feel it move with the same urgency.
