Advice needed! i have received a NOIP

Slightly related - i was driving down the M1 on Sunday evening, passing through the gantry cameras towards London - when a naughty 335d caught my eye - we proceeded to exchange varying levels of engine revving, happily and innocently comparing noise levels and acceleration (clutch engaged) which was good fun - when we both found ourselves behind further speed capable cars - quite a few of us were passing under the gantry cameras of a variable speed limit set to 60 (red circle, so not advisory), at significantly over this speed (as clarkson says.. everyone drives at 95..).

There were no flashes (presumably why everyone is so happy doing 95 in a variable 60 limit), so i'm wondering if any of them were on, and if there are any roadangel/laser detector/jammer/etcetc type devices that may of hinted as to which are on, and which are not.

I'd like to have the actual answer to that common question.. when you're driving down the motorway and everyone is obviously speeding under the gantry cams - but its like nobody cares or they know something you don't.. surely there's one laser device that may tell you if they're on or not?

The thing that made me laugh was their was no mention I was on the wrong side of the road about to overtake a string of cars! Like already already mentioned, I was just about to enter a national leaving a 30 :headbang:

And to add another twist... Unrelated to this... My wife who has had a clean licence, never been caught got caught last week at 82 on the a38 coming hime from work... and also received a NOIP!

Never heard of anyone getting caught on the A38 before and now thats both of us driving like miss daisy now!

Seems to be a national motorist witch hunt on at the moment.

Until the start of this year I had only ever seen a handful of mobile units. These days they seem to be everywhere. It surely must be revenue led as they are nearly always on dual carriageways, motorways and other non residential areas where the likelihood of pedestrians being at risk is 0. All the people slamming their brakes on and oncoming cars flashing is actually more of a safety issue than if we were all left alone to cruise along at 75mph.

It's a bit of a "man in the pub" style opinion but I would really rather the supposedly over stretched Police would spend more time chasing criminals and preventing/solving some crime than collecting over time pay while standing on a gantry over a motorway pointing a hairdryer at your average honest hard working Joe that is going to work to try to make some already heavily taxed money to feed his family.

As an FYI i know someone who has been caught on the M1 gantry camera's near luton... Doing 70 when the camera had 50.

But according to my road angel (which i am not sure how accurate) not all of the camera are real - as my RA wont beep at them.

Ah interesting - does the road angel work by detecting the laser or from a map of cams?

If it's detection, does it cover all angles of the car (cams from behind, and in front?). Presumably if its a rear facing camera, detectors wouldnt notice until it's too late?

I don't think they should be allowed to stick fake cameras up .. or at least "cameras not in use" as they call it. also - what's with people being afraid of using the hard shoulder when the signs instruct them to do so?

The road angel is a GPS with a database loaded. It simply warns by location. The connected version allows you to flag a live location for vans etc that updates all other connected users.
 
Well the letter came today with an offer to do the speed awareness course... Its £92 in derby (by AA) and lasts 4 hours... and have evenings and a sat slot in october.

Checked leicester and thats £90, and 4.5hrs!

But still no picture which i requested :headbang:

I'm sure they wouldn't set up a camera on the wrong road, so my advice is to take the speed awareness course and move on. If points were to be involved, you might want to fight it, but there aren't. :thumbsup:
 
If you're not with Admiral (group) for insurance, do the course over the points :)

If you are with Admiral (quite possible if a Londoner .. as Admiral group insurers are the only ones who offer sub £10,000 premiums) .. it makes little difference as you 'have' to declare the SAC and get penalised the same as the points.. except the points are cheaper than the course.

It would be nice to have a comprehensive reliable and trustworthy system for camera detection/alerts, i'm off across France and Spain on Tuesday - woulda been nice to have a heads up to avoid any potential tickets!

I use a gps based locator that you can upfate daily if you wish, its very good for fixed speed camers and knows most of the mobile spots too

However I wouldnt recomend using one in france, as they confiscated and issue a heavy fine for using speed camera locators and detecters

I did almost upgrade to one of the newer snoopers that uses both gps with a database and a detector as well that could detect laser and radar

I had it in the car for about a week, it constentaly brought up false postives for miles away, for trafic lights, traffic coutners and those signs that light up when you are going to fast. In the end I ended up turning off radar and laser and just using the gps so i returned it

I have a roadangel with the lazer detectors... In all the years i have had it only once has it picked up a camera on a bridge over a motorway years ago.

In this case it didnt pick up the mobile camera... Maybe they changed the lazer tech used :?

Lucky with points my insurance (according to the comparison sites) is the same... But will do the course for good measure anyway.

Careful putting in your points in a comparison web site as you may get a nasty letter in the post "we notice that you have received points" from the insurance company you are with.

Too many stories about when people "play" with the settings that the insurance companies pick that up and assume it is true (points, accidents, mods, whatever).
 
It won't work with the lasers as the "golfball" sits in your windscreen and the vans/police aim at the numberplate or headlights for a good reflection.

Personally I'm going to invest in some laser parking sensors for the front of my car. They use the same unregulated frequency of laser as many other devices which has the sometimes unfortunate effect of creating interference. (and before people jump in on this, so do several active cruise control systems fitted by manufacturers) As they alert you to such interference and allow you to turn them off so as to not interfere with law enforcement (which might require you to slow down to safely operate a switch) or automatically shut down after a suitable period of warning and as long as they are bought for a legitimate purpose and are branded or documented as such, you should be OK. Remember, they work on an unregulated bandwidth.
 
I keep that instruction booklet in my glove box Stuart 8)

The first time mine received interference, I was so wondering what the noise was that I was passed the danger point on the M4 before I realised :oops:
 
It screams at you and if you have never heard it before, you are checking all the instruments as you think you must have run out of oil or so :D

I have had this since the car was new, and only once I have had a case of interference with some other device...
