advice needed, .. catastrophic engine failure

Not on the M , Thank God, i have a suzuki grand vitara runaround a v6 petrol, started it tonight and it fired up but sounded like all the mains or ends had jumped out, it then stopped, and wont turn over, the starter just whirrs. too wet to even look under the bonnet tonight , i guess the next step is put a socket on the crank pulley to see if it has siezed, or can a starter jam up the ring gear ?, i fear the worse personally but any ideas would be appreciated. thanks guys :(
 
Sorry to hear of you problem (good job its not the M). Suggest starting with the easy options - if the starter is spinning then its not throwing out the gear to engage on the ring gear so may just be an issue here. Other than that its just a slow process of elimination.
 
thamks alan j, still too wet to even look yet as the cornish spring is here today, 4 inches of rain forecast, it was the nasty knocking that i am worried about and then the fact it stopped, thinking ends, mains or cam chain snapped and valves hitting. will investigate a bit further tomoz :?
 
cant get my head round this one , the car wont turn over, the starter just whirrs; but when in gear, if i turn the key the starter drives the car forward or backwards making me think it isnt siezed; any ideas ? :?
