Advice; keep the coupe or get an M Coupe...

Ed - you've not convinced anyone else, so I guess you've not convinced yourself either? You are the only one who can make the decision. However, if you want a nudge - stop wasting your life and go and buy an M :driving:

^^^^

This..

Get one bought... You will be a hero doing 17k a year in the M coupe....

Mine is used daily and i couldnt really imagine buying another car for the majority of the time to get the odd hour at weekends in my "main" purchase.

Buy one,get your monies worth, grin, scare yourself when it flips out when you least expect it....Sell it when the time comes....

Get and M. If you think of reasons not to buy one there are plenty - Finance, Less comfortable then the 3.0i, higher insurance, running costs, etc etc not to mention you will pick up more stone chips then the coupe as you will be travelling at higher speeds :driving: Its going to hurt a little if you have one out of warranty and something goes wrong....I won't lie all the above is probably true, BUT it is the most characterful, fun machine I have ever owned, the smile factor alone puts all the negatives aside. You only live once and if I was 25 I would just do it!

Thanks for all the feedback guys, all very much appreciated!

From my perspective having had a 'weekend car' in the past, I would always prefer to run any car as a daily rather than save it for occasional use. In terms of ease of use as a daily, is the M really that different from the Si? I've had some fairly uncompromising dailies in my time (including a stripped, bucketed 306GTi6), and I've found the Si very pleasant to run even in comparison to the more sane commuters I've owned! Is the clutch really a lot heavier on the M?

I realise there is a wealth of knowledge on the subject already on the forum, but has anyone had any real shocker bills for problems which have cropped up during M ownership? From what I have read it appears the lambda sensors can go dickie which can be a little pricey, and there appears to be a throttle hesitancy issue, which seems to affect a number of regulars, with no apparent cure... Are clutches a regular thing? I've not read of any needing them thus far!

I've already got 224s, so tyre replacement costs I'm already familiar with, I was definitely expecting steeper servicing costs when I bought the Si, so the £280 inspection 2 was a very pleasant surprise back in October. The £540.00 inspection 2 cost with TWG Automotive in Camberley is perfectly agreeable also. Tax isn't really a massive problem, I can definitely find another £220 a year for that.... I'd already forecasted my fuel bills based on 25mpg, so again I think I'm more than catered for provided I'm not a complete goon with it....
I suppose all that's really left is to take a test drive (more as a formality), and then save up and buy one really.....!

Thoughts...?

Is the clutch really a lot heavier, yes, is the engine jerky when cold yes. Are they un-commutable, No, just different. It really sounds like you want an M so go for it.

If you're prepared for costs excellent, the only big difference will be the cost of brake discs really (but not a common replacement), I've just paid £660 fitted/ balanced for 4 Michelin PSS' on the 224's hardly budget busting. I never understand the big deal over the tax.....as you said its £220 a year <an extra £20/ month....not a huge deal.

As for some of the scarier issues people do experience them yes, rod bearing failure, which can cause scary bills, (GA41 had one recently). Things like Vanos is an issue as are the engine mounts, not expensive in themselves, but it's the consequential damage that they can cause. I believe that mmm-five actually had to replace his engine for some reason and Jimmybell had a fairly expensive issue recently which was related to the valve clearances I believe.

In general these are pretty reliable, If you maintain it fastidiously and are aware of all of the potential issues, which after some research here you will be, it's just a case of regularly checking for issues.

The DSC pump and control unit can fail. That's a £2.5k+ fix...

The clutch is heavier, but not unmanageable as Steve says. You get used to it. Just like you get used to driving it like miss daisy till it's warm. And the gearbox that is notchy between first and second anyway, but is a bitch when it's cold. None of these make the car undrivable, it doesn't have a fatal flaw that will make you regret buying it down the line, at least not one I have heard of. Most people sell because of the costs, or not wanting to put miles on, or bizarrely not driving it enough. Or more commonly on here nowadays they sell to buy a Porsche for some strange and unfathomable reason

It's not the easiest car to drive, and if you don't treat it with some respect it will scare you, might even kill you, or itself. But why would you want an M car that's too easy to drive ? Seems to be contrary to the point IMO.

And the noise  ...it never gets old, at any speed, driving it in any manner. You'll need windows down to get close to a semi of course  ,but roof down in the roadie it's an aurally orgasmic symphony of anger and barely restrained insanity with a touch of puddy tat purrrrr to take the edge off. It's awsome. 8)

Buy one - in the words of forum members down the years - DO IT !

Oh, sticking calipers aren't an easy or cheap fix, just avoid spraying a pressure washer onto them and maybe get them re-built at some stage.

Headlights aren't cheap either, £800 a unit and TomScott had one go not too long ago.

But we've not heard of anyone who has had it ALL go wrong at the same time, or under their single ownership :!:

Yet.

Ha, very true. And the vast majority of owners don't seem to suffer anything disastrous.....only seems to be the guys with warranties

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm considering moving from my Z4 3.0si to a MC. I just keep reading how raw it is and fun it is to drive. Plus being a coupe, I'd be able to take it to the track.

However, in my case, I love driving with the top down. I could go into a M Roadster but I think I'll keep my 3.0si. ESS just released a supercharger for the N52. Gives you 80 more hp for $5000. If extra power is what you're looking for with your 3.0si Coupe, maybe the supercharger is an option.
