Advanced Driver training / accreditation..

Great progress B21. It's easy to sit in the comfort zone. Moving out is where the the growth takes place. Good luck with your ROSPA assessor

Just an update on this..

I've not yet got round to taking my ROSPA advanced driving test, in part due to an unscheduled eye operation with attendant recovery period and in part due to the local group's lack of availablity of examiners. I plan to finish that of in December...all not helped by the test / training location being 50 miles / over an hour away..

Moving on, following from my good pass mark with the IAM guys more locally in the Borders I've been invited to become a 'National Observer / Assessor'..

https://www.iamroadsmart.com/become-an-observer

https://www.iamroadsmart.com/my-dashboard/examiners/national-observer-assessor

I've been out for a couple of days training with my tutor..who is very very capable and quite demanding!

Another training day and then test time..

My formal exam will take place hopefully before Christmas as there's locally a major drive (pun) to sign up folks supported by local goverment and soem charities supporting the initative.

In the mean time I'm being let loose on some older drivers assessments which should be amusing.

However, here in the Borders, the primary focus is on the 17 to 26 group where, like many areas we have an elevated incidence of crashes...often very serious.

It's taking me a little while getting my brain round to coaching the 'yoof' segment and the specific issues that brings. :tumbleweed:

Challenging times ahead but hopefully also a good feel factor .

Well the simulation of a 17 year old 6 weeks after passing his test in a hot hatch was pretty worrying.... :tumbleweed:

If you look at the full picture trail you'll see a beautifully executed over take and return to the 3 rd of 4 lanes..all while maintaining exactly 79 mph! :driving:

I prefer my other representation....

Gentle poking at each other is fun. Better than the 'Dutch Assault' we used to have. Why you no like him enuff_zed?

But I do!
I'm pretty sure (well, I hope!) that Peter takes my ribbing in the context it was made.
If he didn't I'm certain I would know about it by now.

I was always taught that you should never make comment if you didn't like getting the same back.

If you read Peter's last reply to me you will see it is actually a very clever dig back at me, and appreciated as such.

Verbal/written jousting of this kind actually takes a lot of thought, keeping the theme going but never quite overstepping the mark. It keeps the brain engaged.

A further update ..for those that are rivetted by this journey..

I passed my IAM Roadsmart test at the end of July 2024 with a "F1rst"..that is the highest mark you can achieve for the standard IAM 'advanced driver'..there is a higher course called the 'Masters' which I'm not yet ready to tackle..

I decided to offer my services to my local group in the Scottish Borders..they asked me to go for the 'National Observer' qualification, this is a Motor Industry formal qualification that allows you to coach would be advanced drivers up to test standard.

Folks have made acerbic comments about teachers versus do-ers..

I have to say I massively underestimated the transistion from advanced driver to coaching would be advanced drivers..far more difficult to be a coach rather than simply a driver.

The expected standards with the attendant methodologies were way more demanding than I thought.

The change from instructing which I've done a fair bit off to coaching was the biggest challenge.

As part of my training plan I've been out with several 'mature' drivers doing senior assessments...

Anyway, last week I passed my nearly 3 hour assessment with one of IAM's senior examiners..

Now I've got two 21 year olds with zero / very limited driving experience.

Still to do my ROSPA test..will do it, just to box it away.

The ROSPA guys look very hick compared to the IAM in so many ways, now I've got really into it. Both working to the same syllabus..different emphasis..IMG_3380.jpeg

Well done Peter.

Don't forget to mention the accreditations when next getting an insurance quote. Some do give discounts

A bit out of sequence but finally completed my ROSPA advanced driving test

Delayed due to their personnel not being available and my 3 separate eye procedures and the run up to and recovery from.

Ironically my weakest issue is my lack of chat !🙈😂
