I know that BMW in Germany has an official fitting for an Apple iPhone that replaces the dashboard lid and storage area like the UK garmin adapter. You could then use the Tom-Tom for iPhone and have the best of both worlds.
When I spoke to my dealer he said it "had not received safety approval in the UK" and they were unable to source or fit it.
...So take a trip to Germany if you have a map :|
