Adding door speakers help

Hiya,

So I am after my next quarantine project.... door speakers and sound deadening.

I am doing this on a budget, as in cheaper is better. My logic is that a door speaker will be better than no door speaker.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JBL-Stage2-424-4-10cm-2-Way-Coaxial-Car-Door-Shelf-Dash-Speakers-150-Watts/174073012976

Should the above work?

I have never messed with car audio before except for adding a new head unit in my first car about 6 years ago. That was easy.

Will I be able to do the whole thing with just bullet connectors? Should I get some cable too?

Cheers!

Those are coaxial speakers - you want 4” mid component speakers (without the tweeter in the middle).

You’ll need a little cable to join the tweeter wiring and bullets are a good way to do this

A great thanks, so yes I need to order some cable? What sorta cable will I need in addition to the bullet connectors? Now struggling to find some speakers!!!

I used this guide to do mine: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53812 & found it very useful.
Same speakers too http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/hertz-dieci-dcx-100-3-4-10cm-2-way-coaxial-speakers. They're not the most expensive by any means but they do the job. I have some suitable speaker cable if you want some? Would save buying a long length that you don't need, like I did  . I'm sure I've got enough bullet connectors you can have too. Let me know if you're interested 👍.

Hi Dave!

Interesting, yours are Coax speakers - they sound OK?

Very willing to take you up on the offer of cables and connectors, otherwise I am likely to end up with 20m + of cable!!!!! How would you like to do this and cost? :)

It's still not the richest sound as it's only the basic system. I did sound deadening to the doors at the same time so that may have affected the overall sound slightly. Good enough for me though & not expensive so I'm happy. Tbh all I do is blast rock out via Amazon Music through my phone.
I don't suppose you're local to me, I'm near Derby, so end me a PM with your address & I'll get them posted to you. You can have the parts FOC. I'll check the cost to post but can't see it being much. I'll let you know.

Well, I only have the basic set up too. Plus a DAB head unit that the previous owner had put in. Frustratingly it's lacking Bluetooth!

I'm also going to do the sound deadening. The noise it makes when you shut the doors is just awful!

EDIT, PM SENT.

Replied  .
I'm using the standard system in mine but added a bluetooth adapter to where the cd Changer used to be. Works great but would be better still if I had a multi function steering wheel. Something I'm considering as the next upgrade but they're so damn expensive :headbang: .

Which adapter did you get? I assume it would only work with the stock headunit. My CD changer is still there!

I actually just fitted a MFSW to mine... Managed to get a complete one on eBay for about £150 at the end of last year. Finally got around to swapping it the other day. Seems like I will need to pull my headunit and see what cable I am missing as it doesn't work!!

I definitely got a bargain on it though. It's a complete wheel. Fairly sure it's got a 3rd party "leather" cover on it though to chunk it up. Works OK for now but once I can figure out how to get the buttons working and COVID is over, I'll send it to Royals.

The adapter I used was this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product..._asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=z4fo-21. There's a bit of chat about it here https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=93757&start=7530.

Cheapest I've found recently is just over £200. I'm struggling to justify that cost at the moment & then there's the cost of a Royals refurb which is what I'd wanted to do as well, just to beef up the wheel a bit.
I've looked into the why the MFSW doesn't work and you have the same age car as me by the looks of it. Mine was born in July '03 & registered in April '04.
It's most likely missing a retrofit cable that fits between the MFSW & the rear of the light switch. Take a look here: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=16422&hilit=mfsw. I've googled the cable & it is still available but bloody pricey for what it is. There's a suggestion further into the post that you could use a different cable or even make up your own for very little cost.

I'm doing the same project at the moment. If you need any help just let me know. I have the door panels off and am adding sound deadening etc., so just ask me!

You will defo need these, I found a number broken, you can find cheaper on fleabay but they don't have the washer.

Speaker wise, forum member Commando_rob put me on to them, a more modern design than the hertz and can be had for a bargain price on fleabay, in my humble opinion made a signifcant difference. I didn't have any connectors in stock and couldn't be bothered to wait for royal snail mail so soldered directly to the speakers and then a bit of heat shrink.
