Adding brake fluid

I have a 2005 Z4 that needs more brake fluid. I have the right kind and know what precautions to take. When I open the brake fluid reservoir, it appears to have a "cup" that cannot be removed. Will the fluid go through it and into the reservoir? Or do I need to remove it--if so, tell me how. Thanks to you all. Nancy

Hi Nancy, and welcome to the forum.
I'm sure you will very shortly get the answer you require, but for me the question would be why you need to add any brake fluid?
Either it is leaking or the pads have become very worn. Either way, I do think you should investigate the cause, not just add more fluid.

By the way, if yours is a 2005 you should really have put this in the E85 section, but it'll be seen anyway.

Oh, and when you get a chance, a little introduction as a 'Newbie' with many photos of your Z would be very much appreciated. :D

yeah its just a filter, fluid goes straight through, the filter stops anything else from getting in there.

though as said, id investigate why you need more fluid... if it is low brake pads and you've refilled to max, be aware some fluid might spill out when you push the pistons back in.

Could be getting low fluid if the brake pads are coming to the end of their life. If the brake pedal feels at all spongy then investigate as mentioned, the pedal should feel firm if you apply pressure.

The cup is just a filter, as above. So you can top up without any worries

Be very careful when topping up brake fluid will strip paintwork. So mop up any splashes in the engine bay and make sure the bottle doesn't have any fluid running down the side, etc.
