Adding aftermarket GPS

Apologies if this has been done before but I can't find the thread.

TomTom has died and so I now have an excuse to pesuade SWMBO that money must be spent on a new system. I always liked the idea of adding an aftermarket unit as i dont have the BMW system fitted and by all acounts it's not so good. So far this is all I have found

http://www.jewellet.com/BMW-Z4-E85-DVD-Player/BMW-Z4-E85-Navigation-System

It seems though that the company is really dodgy and anyway the system is crap.

Are there any better known alternatives ? I really like the idea of the pop up screen

Cheers

you could go with a single din in dash motorised flip up unit?

obvious pro's and cons to that of course:

Pro:
available from proper aftermarket brands (pioneer, alpine, zenec etc)
massive increase in sound quality
better user interface/reliability
multiple other features (bluetooth/apps etc)
example: https://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-pioneer-avh-x7800bt-avicf260_p-33041.htm

con:
will block heater vents when open
much more expensive than the option you posted.
appearance not OE (subjective)

I went down a slightly different route. I opted for single din unit with bluetooth audio and no navigation. What that does mean though, is if I stream audio from my phone and have google maps running at the same time, I get audio guidance through the car speakers as you would do with a regular sat nav over music.

EDIT: you can retain the steering wheel controls as well if you do this btw, usually just requires an adapter which costs around £20

That is just a cheap headunit with an off the shelf facia.

If you want to go that route then get a Recomendation on headunit and pick the facia up if eBay for a few quid.
