Adding "Adaptive M suspension" after production - I need you

Hello guys !

I'm writing on the board quite worried of having made a big mistake !!! :(

I'm about to pickup my new Z4 next week but I just pointed out that I might have forgotten a precious option: the adaptive M suspension !

When I had to make the options selection I thought that is was not very important and that I wouldn't feel the differences... so I choose not to take it, but I've read many comments meanwhile that say it's a big improvement and that the car is more confortable in normal mode and sportier in sport and sport+ mode.

I think I'll never use the sport+ mode, at least in the beginning, since it disables the traction control and that I'm not a professional driver enough to be sure to drive such a car without it.

So I'm really stuck with 2 questions:

- Do you think in normal and sport modes the difference is really important with the adaptive suspension ?

- Do you think it's possible to add it even if the car is already built ? And do you think it would be much more expensive than the original option ?

Thank you very very much for your answers ! I'm dying with these questions... :(

Don't have an answer, but I doubt you can add on--there would be suspension pieces, control modules and computer chips involved. Sport mode in my 07 3.0 Si coupe doesn't play with suspension, only with throttle control (makes it very touchy--in a good way) and lowers the power steering boost. I've only driven M3s, M5s and M6s in MSM (M sport mode) on the track. In that mode, you really would have a major handful on the road.

futuryou - welcome.

I think the 2009 is too new to get much definitive input from board members yet so mostly it will be overspilll knowledge from other models or forums that use the system

I'm with Smokin that once ordered (even if not built) there is no way to change the suspension on the order. I'm afraid you have to live with it. Of course you can ask the dealer if it's a retrofit option but expect little knowledge yet likley a blanket 'no' as they won't know and if it can be done a huge bill. Specifically any retrofit costs a lot more than OEM fit as they substitute components on the production line so there is little real cost difference but retrofit requires full cost of all the new parts and labour to fit.

I think you have to live with what you have and enjoy it, which from the sounds of the way you intend to drive you will

Hi,

Retro fit is possible. But some suspension parts need to be replaced, so almost new parts are getting obsolete. So guess when I look into the E89 parts catalogue (http://de.bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E89/Roadster/Europe/Z4_30i-N52N/LHD/N/2009/february/browse/), besides some small parts, springs and dampers you need the processing unit. I think the problems start because of missing wires in the cable harness. And the costs, just a wild guess, more than 3 times the factory installed price. It will also hard to find an official BMW service station that is prepared to do the job (risk of introducing problems, warranty).

Is the stiffness of standard suspension on new Z4 same as old Z4 with sport suspension? Does the Adaptive M Sport Suspension on new Z4 give you stiffer suspension (any modes) than its standard suspension.

I will only choose to have Adaptive M Sport Suspension if standard suspension is softer than old Z4 with sport suspension.

Neat graphic Mike.
Shows just how much they havw softened up the new model (well at least for the US market)
