Felipe Massa has successfully undergone surgery for the injuries he suffered in his accident in qualifying in Hungary.

Ferrari said the driver will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit at the AEK hospital in Budapest, where the Brazilian was taken after being hit by a spring during Q2.

Massa had suffered a damaged skull and brain concussion, as well as a cut on his forehead.

Brawn confirmed the spring belonged to a damper from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car, weighing around 800 grams.

Last week, Henry Surtees was hit by a wheel when he was travelling at 120mph during a F2 race at Brands Hatch, and he died later from fatal head injury. Massa was lucky that only a spring hit him, not a wheel. But who will be his replacement? Test drivers are Luca Badoer and Marc Gené.

According to Sky Sports News he is in a life-threatening situation :(

Really? BBC News said his operation was successful, although he is in ICU. Hope he will be fine. But he may miss the rest of this season.

Really shocked by this, watched it earlier and didnt realise it was so serious. I seriously hope he has a full and speedy recovery. With the shock of Henry Surtees earlier in the week, this has been a terrible week for motorsport.

Doctors say it is too early to judge whether Felipe Massa will race again after it was revealed on Monday that the Brazilian suffered damage to his left eye in his Hungarian Grand Prix crash.

Massa is still in hospital recovering from a skull fracture and concussion after he was hit in the face by a spring from Rubens Barrichello's car.

Local media quoted the hospital's professor Robert Veres from Budapest as saying that the eye injury could be enough to end Massa's F1 career.

"He has suffered some damage to the eye," said Veres. "We don't know whether he'll be able to race again."

Sad news. :(
