AC Schnitzer Z4MC at Torque Developments, Essex

I was collecting my RS4 from AmD Tuning near Lakeside in Essex after a bit of work :D and in the next door unit called Torque Developments I couldn't help but notice a black Z4MC up on a ramp. A rare sight as it is, but this one had the Schnitzer rear wing, and a number plate starting ACS...

I had intended on popping in to have a nosey but ended up being distracted by the new Milltek exhaust on the RS4 and forgot :?

Anyone's on here?

Pics of the RS4 you mean? Unfortunately none of the ACS car today, but here are our cars a few days ago - shame about the weather

I have 'compared' them side by side, and prior to the work completed by AmD this week on the RS4 (inlet valves and manifold cleaned, pre-cats removed, Milltek exhaust and a remap), the MC would actually pull clear from the Audi. Being 200kg lighter helps of course.

However, the RS4 has now been dyno'd at 430 bhp (a big increase - it was down on power) and after driving it home today I think it would show the MC a clean pair of pipes in a straight line. In the wet...no contest.

I love them both though - very different but brilliant cars

Thanks, having some work done on the M3 engine, have decided to go down the NA route like the Z4M. The M3 will be going to Simpsons Motorsport in a few weeks to have power pullies, GruppeM Carbon Airbox & Schrick (284) Cams, anti-roll bars. Already got the Akrapovic Evolution exhaust & some carbon mods. Boy does the Akrapo sound good. Also still haven't had the Z4M lived mapped to take into account the Stage 3 head, incol values & cams. When the work is finished on the M3 e92 will get both mapped at brunty by CA-AUTO at the same time. The Z4M is so raw, but the M3 is so smooth, best of both worlds.

Here's a link on youtube of a Z4MC vs RS4

No it's true and neither does an V8 R8. ;)

There's a run between an rs4 and a Zed on you tube by the m5 board and they are neck and neck.

I recall that many RS4s did not dyno at the specced power output. I traded in a Z4MC for an RS and was surprised that there wasnt more difference. Of course the RS was a better very fast daily driver inall weathers.

I am currently well on the way to acquiring a Z4MC again to go with the X5 4.0D I need for carrying capacity. Having said that for long haul motorway driving the X5 has advantages over the E92 M3 I swapped for it but is no real M car on fun twisty roads.

i always thought an RS4 would piss all over a Z4M, i'm surprised by this.[/quote]

A lot will depend on the circumstances - from a standing start the RS4 should be quicker with 4wd and an extra 90 BHP, however, they can be down on power (mine was until this week's visit to AmD) due to carbon deposits and vacuum issues, and of course the MC is approx 200 kg lighter so from a rolling start there won't be much in it.

On a twisty, bumpy or wet road though the MC would have a much harder time keeping up.

The MR and M3 posted above look lovely - nice combo.

I appear to have dragged my own thread off topic the moment the moment I started it..lol..I am still keen to know if the Schnitzer modified car I saw on Saturday is anyone's from here and what it's had done to it?!

Nice list of M power motors

I'm thinking of buying a V8 M3 at some point and although I've driven one, I'm not that impressed. I know its fast, but I found it a bit detached from the action. Currently have CSL and previously a Z4MC, so like things a bit more hardcore the the latest M3.
Can you tell me how you think they compare to the Z4mc. My primary use is a weekend car/toy.
Do you think the M3 a bit too bland in comparison to Z4?

The M3 pictured (comp pack with DCT gearchange) was my second E92 the first being a manual. The M3 is a fantastic car and hugely capable in fact so capable that I felt that I was generally using only a small proportion of its capabilities. I like to feel that I have the car working hard and with the high revving engine found it too easy to be travelling at crazy speeds for the public road . The DCT is technically magnificent but whilst undoubtedly changing gear faster does make thing seem a bit robotic and is not great in day to day low speed manoeuvres.

I tried a change of tack when I sold the first E92 to get aVW Golf GTD and a supercharged elise to get a compromise of practicality and fun. The latter giving huge driving fun at speeds that dont risk a spell in prison. My wife was diagnosed with MS a couple of years ago and she couldnt climb in and out of the Elise, went back to the M3 with a DCT this time.

The DCT is terrific and unlike the SMG of the E46 M3 works well in auto mode indeed I found myself getting lazy and leaving it in auto a lot which probably defeats the purpose of an M car. The need to carry a wheelchair and lots of stuff lead to the X5.

I had 2 E46 M3s before the Z4MC the 2nd one the runout CS which was improved by the CSL brakes and steering. I went on a BMW high performance driving course at Mugello just as the Z4MC came out and they had replaced the M3s in their fleet with Z4MCs. I loved the car and ordered one. However it was my daily driver and after a year decided I needed something a bit more practical so tried the RS4.

I dont think I would have a Z4MC as my only car (indeed with current requirements I couldnt) but might well in other circumstances.

Hope this helps, a bit difficult to articulate what is probably mostly about how something feels to drive rather than outright performance.
