Ac not working

Hi all
i have a problem with my sons Z4 2008, we only brought it 3 weeks ago and at the time of buying it we didn't realise the ac wasn't working. The car has only covered 11,000 miles from New.
The switch for the AC does not illuminate when pushed, i have checked the gas which seems fine, the clutch on the pump also does not work and the ac main rad cooler fan does not work, the other bit that does not work correctly is the blower fan. it only seems to be running on slow speed, the only other thing thats not working on the car is the left hand door mirror. one thing that i need to mention is it had a flat battery before i brought it and the dealer had fitted anew Battery.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Hi and welcome Barry. :thumbsup:

From what you have said it sounds like it may have gone into transport mode - you need to get the fault codes read on the OBD to confirm. When it does do that the HRW also doesn't work, but you probably can't check that this time of year!

They left the factory in Transport mode so they could be driven onto and off transporters without draining the battery. The supplying dealer was supposed to delete it during the PDI, but it seems many just turned it off! :headbang:

Although this thread is mostly about Carly, I don't think it can be turned off or deleted with Carly - but some on here also have INPA or ISTA which I think is what will be needed. https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=97818 Failing that a local BMW Indy should be able to do it.

You're in transport mode mate. Get yourself an obd cable and ISTA and I can guide you through getting it turned off/deleted :)

Or if you're in the bucks/Berks/Oxon area I can do this for you, I won't even charge because I'm nice like that :rofl:
 
Definitely sounds like transport mode, I had it last year. Take it back to the dealer if you got it from one, if it's had a flat battery or it's been disconnected that's when it occurs. It's an easy fix for someone with the right piece of kit, good luck

Thanks for all your input, I’m hoping to take it to my local garage tonight to see if they can get into the system.
I’ll give feed back once I have it sorted, for checking the gas you can check this by pushing the valve on the ac line, just a quick push but make sure you do not breathe in the gas or get it in your eyes.

Just a update on my sons car,
Firstly I would like to thank everyone for all the advice and help, the great news is that you were all correct it was in delivery mode, the only down side is that we have had a intermittent problem with the ABS light coming on and off on the car since we brought it 6 weeks ago but since he put his laptop on too clear the delivery mode he said it had a ABS code coming up and he couldn’t clear it so then hit me with a right whammy ?? I would need a new ABS pump and he had one in stock that was reconditioned but to have it fitted and bled it would be £800 odd pounds??.
The fact the car has only done 11,000 miles seems a bit odd ??. I think it’s probably only a brake sensor ??. Does any one have any advice ??, it was suggested by one of the post I read about disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes which I’m happy to try but I’m wondering if I’ll be back to square one as that’s what I’ve been told by you guys caused the problem in the first place.
The only other advice I need is why my left hand mirror still does not work.

Not sure what that means ?
Just by depressing the schraeder, you are a/ letting refrigerant into the atmosphere, however small amount it is , isnt great and b/ you are loosing a small amount of charge , of which the car is charge is calculated by weight and will now be slightly undercharged. Being in the trade for 30 plus years , I can help with a/c issues and it can be very dangerous for people not understanding how the system works, what needs to be done to repair and general advice. Thats why I was just asking :D

hi Barry, glad the transport mode has cleared some of the issues, I don't have any experience of the abs pump but I'm sure someone on here will have. Was the garage you got the car from the same one that's cleared the transport mode? Was there a warranty period on the car when you got it?

INPA is diagnostic software, it can tell you how much refrigerant is in the system. I used it to determine mine was at only 10% full when the A/C stopped working last year.
