Abscess

Jeez!

Just coming out of three days of what I can only describe as excruciating agony. I've had an abscess above my upper right canine tooth which has been developing for a week, two visits to the dentist, antibiotics, over the counter pain killers did nothing. Visit to A&E at 3.00am to be give stronger antibiotics and 30mg codeine and 30 hours later the pain is finally receding.

I know we all feel pain differently but to put into context; I usually don't have anaesthetic at the dentist for fillings; colleague who's just given birth said it was less painful the her abscess; I've had broken arms, dis located shoulder and knee ligament. None of my previous ailments came close

Wow, I can do without another! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Cheers

I used to get loads of these ealier in life so can totally sympathise as its very painful and miserable thing to have. Some dentists will try the antibiotic route first after taking an xray if the infection doesn't look to be too severe however of course it will take few days for the antibiotics to do its job. If the infection if more severe as Ruby said the tooth needs opening up, draining and root treated. The infection only has to be tiny, small amount of puss to cause alot of pain. I had one over the weekend once and normal pain killers didn't touch it and was pretty much hell at night. I nearly went to A&E and bumped into my neighbour on the Sunday who had broken his arm and he had some spare codeine pills which calmed it down until I could see the dentist on the Monday.

In my case I was getting regular abscesses on my top four front teeth even after root treatment. It was put down to having overly large root canals where I was getting tiny fissures on the sides of the canal which was letting the infection in. The only treatment was a hospital visit to have gum bone above the teeth removed and root canals exposed and then cemented up and sealed and the gum bone replaced and the gum stitched up. The op took 3 hours but was very glad I had it done as I've had no trouble since.

I hate teeth :(

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Tim.

Totally understand your pain, I had two partially ruptured wisdom teeth that had partially broken through the gum. Every now and again they would get infected and an abscess would form. Until you can numb it, the pain consumes you. The pain/abscess would be right in the joint between upper and lower jaw. I couldn't eat, sleep and when the jaw really swelled up, talking was difficult. I've broken my leg and arm playing football and toothache is worse. Counting down the minutes until you can take another painkiller. Glad your over the worst.

Thanks folks, feel like a whimp but unless you've had it you won't know. Tuesday I had it drained and by Wednesday it was 10 times worse, Thursday night was A&E for max prescription codeine. Just gone 14 hours without pain killer and only getting a twinge so hopefully on the mend

Sympathise mate, I had a wisdom tooth out a couple of months back and the hole got infected after it had started healing, the pressure built up and the pain was excrutiating. Went back and was given anitbiotics which sorted it - kinda - but it's not healing well and still gives me grief some days, wish I'd left the fecker in there. Hope you get sorted soon, there's nowt like chronic toothache for putting and edge on your attitude. :)

There's a dentist on here if I recall? Drnick? Or is he a regular doctor? Maybe one of the doctor/dentist can give you a surplus of the good stuff  just another thing in life you have to deal with. :(

Toothache or tooth related pain is the best of all pains IMO.

I am surprised this is getting better without the need for draining as the pus can't go anywhere, unless it has found a way out but then that suggests to me that it could get infected again.

Hope you get sorted.

Hi again, definitely on the mend, no unbearable pain now since Friday, it's a bit tender in that area and aches a little after i've eaten but settles soon after. I'm sure no-one wants the details but it's draining OK!

I'm back to the dentist in 8 Days when the antibiotics have done their stuff - tempted to have the tooth removed so it won't happen again. this is the second time for this tooth to cause problems and as SWMBO says 'not having it won't spoil my looks'

thanks all

I had to go through several lower jaw abscesses before they finally agreed to remove three (?!) wisdom teeth. It's an all-consuming pain! I remember very vividly getting off a train in London one time and basically feeling it go "pop". Soooo disgusting, but the feeling of relief afterwards was incredible, albeit temporary.

I still have some extra boney bits on my jaw where the tissue around the lower wisdom tooth became calcified by the infection. The tooth was locked in place so after about 50 mins of trying to use the extraction tool and bending my jawbone in a worrying way, they cut the tooth up and it came out ok (nearly - there are still some small fragments in there). In the final minutes the anaesthetic wore off which, as you can imagine, was ideal.

So yeah, you have my sympathies! The antibiotics will work pretty quickly, so you should be on the mend soon. :)
