Abit of a dilema...

I have recently secured a new job which entitles to me a company car allowance...

I will be doing around 30k miles a year so I am going to have to buy something comfortable but I have no bloody idea?!

The zed is staying in the garage and will be played with on weekends if the weathers nice.

So my question is this.. Other than the new z4 what other cars would anyone recommend?

What's your criteria, Hatchback, Saloon, price range etc.

I managed to wrangle a BMW as my CC, wanted rear wheel drive and the engines offer a good compromise between power and CO2.

335 d ,I got one for doing the miles & get average 42 mpg !don't know what they are like for company tax ! The car is fantastic had it 18 months now & still puts a big smile on my face when you press that pedal .Or even a 3 diesel 320 d !

I have a 318d Company car and it is brilliant, ok its not the fastest thing in a straight line but its still pretty good fun to chuck around a back road, plus i get about 800 motorway miles from a tank!

I know you are getting an allowance so dont have to worry too much about CC Tax. if i was in the same situation i would look at either a 120d coupe or if the finances can do it a 123d coupe, I had a 123d coupe before the Co Car and it was fantastic, good fun, quick and would do 55mpg

Hi Tiggy1985,
I had the same recently, changed jobs last year and received a car allowance. Had only bought the zed a few months previously, so had no desire to get rid. I didn't buy a 'company car' with the allowance until last month when I picked up a 120d coupe. It's a great car, quick from the take off, returns arounds 50 mpg, all the extras you would need and still leaves me with change from my monthly allowance.

Thanks for the replies.

I have around £8000.00 a year to finance/lease something and they don't really are what as long as it's taxed, mot'd etc etc.

A few of my new colleagues have the 320d and they say it's a fantastic car... Just not sure I want to stick with BMW for the work horse... (I'll get ready for the abuse! Haha)

ChawenHalo has a point on the D3 in mono (201hp) or biturbo (214hp) form. Used values are high, but with good reason. They are supremely comfortable as they use non RFT's and have properly sorted suspension. They also have unbelievably good seats. Being a 4-pot D they also handle better than the 6-potters whilst performance is similar and fuel economy is better. The mono turbo is not co2-classified for RFL so costs £215 pa, whereas the biturbo is co2-classified and costs £130 :P

Available as:
MT - saloon and estate
BT - saloon, estate, and coupe

If you drove one, you'd go nowhere near the standard model. Other positives are almost-standard servicing costs, V8-levels of torque, 45-50mpg. Negatives? Insurance is steeper (but not ridiculously) and the BT gets through rear rubber in 12k miles and they're £330 a corner. Otherwise, a no-brainer. 320d...pah! :D

You most certainly should not buy a diesel - even with the best filters, they emit nanoparticles that are known carcinogens, including causing brain damage. Most environmentally unfriendly.

I really wish BMW would bring that 23 diesel engine from the 1 series out in the 3 series. Such a great car the 123d they really keep their value too.

Alpina D3.

Get rid of the Zed and buy a new Zed :)

Far as I am concerned it's a great car to stomp up the motorway, roof up or down. Similarly I travel around 25,000 miles per annum, get 38 mpg and an infinite number of smiles.

or

Get a 320d and be, well, you know...........

38 mpg? :o Is that a diesel? :poke: I barely get 42mpg on a 4 pot oil burner. and 24 mpg out of the 3.2 :D

The 4 pot oil burner in the 3 series body handles really well, there's almost a metre of space between front bumper and engine tucked right in the back of the bonnet/ cabin. Makes it pretty much a Mid Front layout. Rather exotic for a repmobile.

A D3 2nd hand should be around 20k and way below for 1st gen (single turbo).

I'm with Sars - I use mine all the time, and either end of the day is always brilliant, irrespective of how sh1t the middle bit may have been. My allowance pays off the loan - not got my mansion and multiple car port yet,so no space / money for a 3rd car. Of course if I did it would be another convertible of some sort 8)

A D3BT won't be below £22k private, used, yet, and D3 mono-turbos start at around £12k for tatty high milers up to around £18k for late low milers with a dealer warranty. The handling balance is incredible and would astonish you. Don't forget. I got an Alpina Z and an Alpina D3BT....very different, and horses for courses. However, the best ride is the D3BT, and it's not that far behind the Roadster S for performance (0-60mph Roadster 5 secs, D3BT 6.9 secs) and in real-world, the torque of the D3 makes it a close-match for our Roadster S.

is everybody odsessed with BMW? I bought a Golf to use as my daily car 2.0 TDi 140 bhp

averages about 45mpg, i'd say 70% town driving

Too dull. Test drove a number of new GTD's and couldn't see any appeal. Same with the Scirrocco. Terribly uninteresting places to sit, but went ok, I guess (the Golf was better). Certainly didn't want to spend money on one, though.
