AA or RAC inspection, worth it?

As you know I'm looking for an m at the moment. Do you think it's worth paying for an inspection on the car from the likes of RAC etc?

Also consider if a car is around 200 miles away it will cost me a few quid in fuel, not to mention my time.

An inspection is about £250

I thought RAC inspections were only about £150 ?

Couple of thoughts... If I was buying an ///M, unless I was buying off someone I know on here and had seen their car already, I would definitely travel to see it myself before buying irrespective of distance. Secondly, and just my personal feeling from experience buying my car, unless you're very mechanically knowledgeable I would get the check done. I wish I had done it when I bought mine - *probably* wouldn't have prevented me buying the car, but there were some undertray / duct parts missing that I would have had the dealer sort, and a seriously worn control arm bush on the front that eventually cost me a new set of front pads and disks, which I think would also have been spotted by an RAC or AA check.

The check, as you suggest, could save you a few quid travelling (think that was what you were saying ?)

Just my tuppence worth :D

My thoughts were to send them and view myself if I get the thumbs up or the seller will negotiate the cost to put right any minor issues.

I think that's the right approach - sorry, misread your post first time hence my adding the third 'thought' at the end

YOU need to go and check the cars yourself. Someone else's immaculate car is someone else's shitter. A few dents here a few scuffs there is normal wear and tear to a lot of people - not me hence why I wouldn't let anyone else view. I wouldn't waste any cash on the AA/RAC either. I would recommend you view the car and make sure it is up to your standard on visuals then check that the history all checks out. From there I would arrange for an MOT or full once over at the nearest BMW dealer telling them that you are possibly purchasing the car so you want to know any problems. If no dealer is close then find out if there is a specialist. Both of these would be well under £250 and much more beneficial. As I understand it going through BMW would also allow you to purchase a warranty from them.

These cars are quite rare so you have to be prepared to travel to view, it took me six months and around six odd cars with over 1,000 miles before I bought mine.

Best of luck

I suppose we all have our thoughts on this.

I've found RAC/AA inspections on cars like this are a waste of money. They come out with crap like the brakes are noisy on a car with cross drilled discs but miss a broken spring.

BMW are not much better.

I suppose all of these people will help you find a car that's not been crashed and trashed but a goog Indy is probably better at checking specialist cars out.

Never buy on someone else's recommendation.

A shitter to me is a scuff free car that looks repainted, I'd rather see the scuff nd know why I might want to paint.

Each to their own but a used car is just that.

Some great advice.

As above the inspection was to see if it warranted me driving to see the car and make my own mind up.

But it's a valid point that everyone as there own opinion on what a "clean" car is.
