A world where the BMW Z series doesn’t exist . . .

For me it really was a zed or nothing else. I would have had a 987S again but the £5k max budget I set myself last summer (OK the wife set!) for a car to do all of a couple of thousand miles a year and sit on the drive.
The MX5 and S2000 didn't really float my boat and I find both very cramped and their isn't much else to choose from at this end of the market. 986S was a possibility but they look very dated and are also cramped compared to the zed.
Early SLK I supppose were an option but i wanted a manual and early SLK aren't anyones idea of a drivers car!
Had a TT Cab MK1 as company car many moons ago and again there just not great to drive although good value these days.

If the Z4MC had not existed, then I'd have not seen it at the Ring and lusted after it, so that when my e34 M5 got poorly I wouldn't have gone out looking for one.

So ultimately I'd still be in an e34 M5.

I sold my modified 911SC put £3K to that price and bough my ///M, now I couldn't afford that 911 prices have gone up that much so an air cooled 911 would be out of the question in 2016 for ///Money, so I'd probably have a Boxster S or an E46 M3. :driving:

Having gone E36 328i, E46 328i, E92 325i, I think I would have stayed BMW but might have gone F20 M135i instead of E86 3.0Si, had the Z4 not been available.

SLK for me
I like the Quattro system and would have said TT but I find the shape a little too much "jelly mould" at times .

I'd want another 2 seater convertible with a similar performance and over all size. On paper a 2008/09 SLK 350 (R171) seems the closest match to my 3.0si. I've never even sat in one let alone driven one, but I think that would be my first choice.

I'm pretty sure I'd be in an elise 111r had the z4m not existed. It's what I set out to buy originally but a slightly disappointing viewing with an immediate test of a different z4m afterwards left me so impressed with the M that the elise never got another look.

Not sure I could go for a 111r now as the engine is so utterly bland and devoid of character compared to the s54 (I actually thought the K series 111s was a much nicer engine to use). I love the way they steer and look but If I did go elise/exige, then it would simply have to be supercharged to make up for the hairdryer behind me. I've been spoilt!

Probably a ///M 235i vert..........saying that I went looking to buy an X6 and ended up with an E89 so quite possibly an X6

I went out to buy a GTR when I came back with the Z4M, so probably would have ended up with one (and a drained bank account!) Drove a cayman directly before the Z4 but wasn't sold entirely - If going for a similar price I probably would have hunted down a cayman S in black

Presuming the Z3MC isn't permitted either, then a Cayman S or 996 Turbo. They were the alternatives I was considering when I bought my ///M. I'm not sure what the relative 2016 prices would allow...

I went to view a Cayman S yesterday, out of morbid curiosity more than anything. Very nice car but just didn't have the wow factor for me. I've always fancied a TVR Tuscan or T350.
