A whole new level of bodgery!

Had a young lad drop by this evening with an airbag light on.
His 3.0i had a parasitic drain which the auto-electrician traced and fixed, but also noticed a bit of tape stuck over the airbag light.
So I tried my Autophix, INPA and Scanner 1.4. None could even see any of the airbag modules. Very odd.
Guessing that the satellite modules feed back through the centre SIM85 I prised out the coin holder behind the handbrake so I could see it.
Quickly became obvious what the problem was:

The wire had been cut and the end taped up, so not an accident.
That wire is red and white striped with a yellow tracer round it. A quick look at NewTIS proved it to be the K-Bus circuit.

For those who don't know, the K-Bus is a kind of ring main that connects all the control modules. If one module fails then it can cause weird things to happen elsewhere. Examples I've seen include indicators working but no light on the dash, wipers working randomly, and even one car where you could only wind the windows up or down with the doors open!

I have a sneaking suspicion that the SIM85 failed and caused all sorts of issues. Rather than pay to get it fixed someone has snipped the wire to isolate it from the K-Bus, to get everything else working. Then a bit of tape over the airbag light and sell it on fast.

No time to fix tonight and the lad is off on holiday in the morning, so we'll tackle it next week. Step one is splice that wire back together. Then we'll see what oddities occur. I have a couple of compatible modules and fingers crossed it will be as easy as fitting one of those.

So this lad has been driving around in a car with no working airbags!
Some people have no morals!

This why we are lucky to have people like yourself on this forum EnuffZed - a potential disaster, or worse, averted!
Couple of things:
Firstly, I haven't fixed it yet.
Secondly, what is worse than a disaster?

What a bodge, you did really well to trace the fault
i'll be honest, it was luck. I suspected the centre module and just took a look to see if the plug was corroded and at the least get the part number.

Good stuff enuff but to be fair owner probably had a knowledgeable auto electrician out who told owner if MOT was approaching he could do something to help it pass or he looked up part saw it was obsolete and said he could do this or that or alternative was scrap the car.
There is going to come a time when enuff has run out of modules, all our cars start failing and it's either a bodge job or the scrap heap. I think in a few years time bodge jobs will become more and more apparent

I am struggling to imagine a competent auto-electrician who would suggest that!!!
However, to my knowledge it has gone through two MOTs with tape over the airbag light, so the tester wasn't particularly competent/conscientious either. They are supposed to check the light comes on, then goes out after it's done a system check.

With regard to the supply of modules, either everyone starts collecting them or they at least let the likes of me, [ref]bigwinn[/ref], [ref]street[/ref], [ref]colb[/ref], etc. know they are available.

I have checked eBay and there seems a number of second hand ones for sale whether or not they are any good is questionable

There are several SIM85 and SBSR. But you take pot luck and a lot of gthe SIM85s are going up towards £200, with no guarantees!
SBSLs are few and far between. I'll buy as many good ones as I can find!
