A week in Lakeland

I just spent a week in the Lake District with Mrs B-Rex and the Z4. What a great part of the world for driving! I did the Kirkstone Pass (twice), the Honister Pass and the Whinlatter Pass, along with numerous other great twisty country lanes. Kirkstone was my favourite for driving, and Honister was the most spectacular in terms of scenery and views.

Here are some snaps I took. I was hoping to enter the first one in this month's photo competition yesterday but I didn't realize that it closed before the end of April, so it'll have to go in for May!

This is the road from Howtown up to Martindale (South side of Ullswater). I was taking some shorts of the lake and Howtown (see below), turned around and thought that there was a great shot of the Z4, the twisting road and the sunset to be had.

From Martindale, looking down on Howtown and Ullswater. We stayed in the hotel towards the right edge of this photo. This was our third stay there and it's surely my favourite place in the world.

We did a quick tour of Thirlmere and from the 'back' side of the lake, you can see some stunning reflections. There are very few boats on this lake and it's well sheltered from wind, so there is little movement of the water.

I bought a tripod a few months back and this trip was my first chance to put it to the test. This is a random pier on Ullswater as the light started to soften and the sun started to disappear.

On Sunday we climbed up Hallin Fell. The views of the lake are nothing short of spectacular.

On Monday, we went to Haweswater. Haweswater is a reservoir and it was created by flooding the village of Mardale. Apparently when there was a drought about 12 years ago, you could see the old village pub through the surface of the water! Incidentally, the road around Haweswater is also good fun for driving - lots of twisty bits but also some straights and good visibility of what is up ahead!

Great pics! I wonder if you'd get a Zed up and over Hardknott and Rhynose? :?
why ever not :?

mines been along hardknott several times :D :driving:

Good to know....I just remember doing it in a Mercedes estate a few years ago and the bloody thing was on three wheels on a lot of the bends

We visited some family friends while we were there and they suggested we do Hardknott and Rhynose - we didn't quite have time. What sort of road is it?

single track, bendy and climbs (then falls) alot :)

usually closed if ice or snowy.

fun to drive it though obviously not too quickly, and more fun if you are not following anybody else.

God's country!

Love the Lakes - very nice

Was doing a Wild camp myself a few weeks ago at the back of Skiddaw

Its one of the steepest roads in England at 1 in 3, together with Chimney Bank in Yorks....check here. And some of those bends I referred to are very narrow and almost 90 degree turns with a 1 in 3 slope, hence why the tail lifts off sometimes!

Theres also a 1 to 2.91 in Wales and I think Porlock Hill on the A39, although only a 1 in 4, is the steepest A-road.

Nice shots - one of my favourite areas and spent a weekend up there a month ago.

Hardknott and Wrynose are awesome passes. Should always be driven East to West so you get to go up the 1 in 3 slopes and down the shallower faces :)

Driven it more times than I care to remember. Best to hang back - get clear road then enjoy

Good advice....never get stuck behind a crawler :headbang:

...and correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there the remains of a roman fort just off the road at the top somewhere?

hehe reminds me of a time a wee while ago...

approaching the pass behind three other cars thinking 'I really don't want to follow these up and back over'.... when the lead car pulls over to let us all past. Then the next lead car pulls over, quickly followed by the next lead car which by this time was the car in front of me... making me the lead car :D

funnily enough I didn't see them again :driving:

Is it as good as Chedworth? Have Tony and Phil been there yet LMAO!

Just a bit of rubbble to me, but supposedly an important staging point on the Roman road to Chester. They did make good straight road though :)
